1773 Fincastle Co Va. The Craigs migrated from PA down the Shenandoah Valley into SW VA.
Fincastle was formed from Botetourt Co in 1772. James Craig purch 480 acres Jan 27, 1774 on the middle Fork of the Holsten River (ref Summers Hist SW VA).
In 1776 Washington Co VA was formed from Fincastle so the Craig land was now Wash Co, VA near Abingdon VA. Pg 1123, James Craig, Sr was sued by John Reid 1782 for a bad debt back to 1774. "Over Kings Mountain" pg 120 lists James Craig, John Craig, and David Craig in the battle of Kings Mountain 1780. DAR Mag Vol 53 apr 1919 lists families who moved from Washington Co, VA to Greene Co, NC, now Tennessee. James Craig, Sr family included.
Early Tenn tax assessors return 1783 in E. Tenn Hist. Society, Vol 39, 1967, pages 124 & 125: James Craig, Sr - no land, James Craig, Jr. 200 Acres, David Craig 200 acres, John Craig listed as a taxable poll.
1801 Tax List of Blount Co.
John, James, Jr, David, James, Sr. Craig; and David Copeland The Craig and Copeland children intermarried and James Craig Jr and David Copeland families moved to now Maury Co. TN about 1806. They settled near each other on the Fountain Creek Area.
1802 Blount Co. TN Court Record states "On motion of call David Craig was administrator of James Craigs Estate." James Craig was on the 1800 Tax List Blount Co. TN and not on the 1803 Tax List. There was no will or inventory. [S234] [S234]
