Shortly after marriage moved to Liverpool, Fulton, Illinois.
OBIT Submitted by Jim Toncray: Monday March 13, 1905 "GONE TO HIS REST Death of J. Smith Toncray, Sunday, at his home in Bryant--- An old resident. Half Century in County Early teacher, farmer, carpenter and stonecutter--A citizen highly esteemed.
Another of the old settlers of Fulton County has passed away. J. Smith Toncray's death occurred at Bryant at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from consumption.
For more than half a century Mr. Toncray had been a resident of Fulton County.
He was born October 26, 1826, near Maysville, Ky. Without great educational advantage he secured sufficient knowledge to allow him to teach school, and also in his early manhood he learned the trade of stone cutting. It was at his birthplace that he was married, on March 18, 1852, to Miss Ruth Harrison, a native of Kentucky. In the winter of the same year they started for Illinois, to make a new home in the new country. They left Kentucky Dec. 8, 1852, and landed at Liverpool, in Fulton County, Dec. 15. They immediately engaged in farming, first locating in Liverpool township, and later occupied a farm in Lewistown township. They then removed to Buckheart township, where they resided on a farm until 1894, when they purchased a home in Bryant, and retired to enjoy their well earned competence.
For some time after settling in Illinois Mr. Toncray did considerable carpenter work and cabinet making. He built the Salem School house south of Bryant.
The couple were the parents of seven children, six of whom, with the mother, who is now 71 years of age, survive. The children are James A. Toncray, residing on a farm in Liverpool township; Francis E. Toncray, who resides near Mount Vernon, in Jefferson County; Mrs Sadie F. Hall, of Canton; Wilber S. Toncray, near St. David; Maurice M. Toncray, living near Jackson, Miss.; and Miss Mary Toncray, residing with her mother.
Mr Toncray was one of the stalwart men in any community where he resided, and his influence was always for the best, although he was never a member of any church. His death will be sincerely regretted by all who knew him and had the pleasure of his friendship or acquaintence.
The funeral will be held Tuesday afternon, at 1 o'clock; at the Methodist Episcopal church in Bryant, the Rev. Mr. Diffenbaugh in charge. Internment will be in the Marysville cemetery."
