He was in the U.S. Coast Survey, appointed 2nd Lt of Infantry, CSA July 19, 1861. Served as Acting Chief Engineer of General Hill's Division and by order dated July 30, 1862 assigned to duty with General Finegan, Tallahassee, Florida. He was surrendered by Major General Sam Jones on May 10, 1865 and paroled at Madison, Florida, May 16, 1865.
He received his engineering degree from the University of North Carolina in 1853.
