Mother: Charity Ann KITCHENHAM |
Owen Thomas Fisher, Sr came to the U. S. in 1854 to Palmyra, N. Y. His two older brothers came to U. S. first and made sufficient money to send for their widowed mother, two sisters and brother. He enlisted in Union Army in 1862 in 160 Inf. Co. I. Transferred tp Co. B. Jan 1 and to V.R.C. 22 June 1864. We have a picture of him in his fatiques. Someone in Michigan has his knapsack and bayonet, per my father Harold Charles Fisher Owen came to Michigan about 1867 to Springlake. There is some confusion about the dates of his army service.
These Fishers had relatives of some kind in Palmyra. I corresponded with some of the descendants, and they sent me a photo of Mrs. Fisher's grave. She was Charity Ann Kitchenham of England. The descendants were not aware that they were kin to our people. In English records I found names that tied all of them together in Sussex County, England.
In a letter from Mr. J. Floyd Fisher of Palmyra, N. Y. he says: "My great grandparents, ROBERT & LYDIA FISHER brought their family from England in 1836. There were two sons, HOWARD FISHER & WILLIAM FISHER, my grandfather and several daughters."
"Howard by strange coincidence went to Michigan and had four sons, HENRY, FRANK, CARROLL & ? I do not know of a kinship between your CHARITY FISHER & my relatives here in Palmyra. My g grandfather ROBERT FISHER was born in England in 1785. They sailed from London on April 28, 1836. My only clue is that they attended CRATFIELD INDEPENDENT CHAPEL on the eve of their departure ." ( Paul Betteridge, of England, advides me that Cratfield Chapel was in Suffolk County, not Kent or Suffex. A book by D. J. H. Clifford, MY ANCESTORS WERE CONGRATIONALIST, states that Cratfield Chapel existed from 1812-1856. He states that the register of births was deposited in the UK Public Record Office, the reference is RG4/2128ertificate.)
Owen Thomas and wife Cynthia are buried at Eldridge or Crystal in Oceana Co., MI.
Many of the names and dates of Owen Thomas' Michigan cousins et al, were given to me by Mrs. Marilyn O'Brien of Ravenna, MICH.
