Mother: Ruth BUCKMAN |
Ruth Harrison Jones writes: "The early life of William Harrison, eldest son of Richard and Ruth Buckman Harrison remains a mystery. There is no record of his residency in Burlington County as an adult except for returning to make his declaration of intent to marry Sarah Bullock. This was done at the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends, his father's church. Permission was granted and they were married on January 2, 1728; William was 39; Sarah was 22 years of age.
The Harrison and Bullock farms are across the road from each other, so the families must have known each other well.
They were married 14 years before the death of Richard, who willed his eldest son only 5 pounds, leaving the other children large estates of land and money. It was not that William was well established with no need for money. William struggled throughout his life to make a living for his wife and children. William, was 50 years of age at the writing of his father's will. William was asked to sign for the 5 pounds he received; while his three brothers divided 17,000 acres of land and his two married sisters received 75 pounds each. A granddaughter, Rebekah Harrison, named in same paragraph as son William, was to receive 30 pounds at age 21.
The writer suggests that Rebekah was William's child, born out of wedlock or to a wife by license (non-Quaker), between 1720 and 1728 causing William to be "disowned" by his father.
The William Harrison farm was in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ, across the county line from Burlington Co."
According to Court records in 1755, "Land belonging to William Harrison (305 acres) were sold by the Sheriff - for debts". The land was located in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, previously owned by J. Lawrence.
William's son, John, who was 23 years of age in 1755, purchased the land at the Sheriff's sale and two years later, quitclaimed half of it to his younger brother, Thomas. That would have been in 1757, when Thomas came of age. John's brother, William, Jr and his wife Alice had long since left the area for Bergen County, Pompton Township, now known as West Milford, Passaic County, NJ.
It is assumed that John and Thomas held the Upper Freehold land in their names as it continued to be the home of their parents for the rest of their lives. William died at his home in 1768 at the age of 79.
Living in Monmouth County during the mid 1700's was not a comfortable experience for those of the Quaker Faith. With the Revolutionary War fast approaching, good Quakers found themselves in trouble. It was necessary to keep a low profile. The Harrison Families of Monmouth County were in the heat of the controversy. John and Thomas owned considerable land; if they remained Quaker they would be heavily taxed in lieu of confiscation of the land or even worse, threatened with prison or death. The following notice was posted in 1775, regarding Thomas who was determined to keep his faith and refuse to carry arms in the War, regardless of the consequences.
THREE POUNDS REWARD
Made his escape this day from the jail of the County of Monmouth in New Jersey, a certain Thomas Harrison, Aged about 36 years; 5 ft., 7 or 8 inches high. He formerly lived in Upper Freehold, from whence he moved into one of the lower counties in Pennsylvania, where he has lived for several years past. He has a wife and three children about a year old, all born at one time, who went off with him. Reward to whoever takes up said run-away and delivers him to the jailer of the County of Monmouth. 10 June 1775 -- Elisha Lawrence, Sheriff [S583]
