Notes
All of the family on this Cummings Family Group Sheet are the family of Mrs. Paul C. Franklin, Jr, 517 South LImestone Street, Gaffney, S. C. 29340. I have tabulated it exactly as she gave it to me. The daughter, Mary, on Mrs. Franklin's line appears to be our proven MARY (POLLY) CUMMINGS.
We are not certain that we are related to Eleazar Cummings. We know that he and his wife had a daughter by the name of Mary Cummings, and that Polly is a nickname for Mary. We know this this daughter was married on December 15, 1778. Mrs. Paul Franklin of S. C. states that this is her line.
We know for certain that our ancestress, thru her Bible record was Miss Polly Cummings. That name is written within the cover. Our ancestress' tombstone reads that she was born 7 Oct 1779 (ten months after the wedding in above paragraph). We feel certain that the two Mary Cummings are one and the same person.
Eleazar Cummings was granted 1000 acres in Washington Co., GA. He may have owned land in Wilkinson Co., GA.
ROWEN Co., NC MARRIAGE BOOK C: Isabel Caswell (sic) married Eleazar Cumens, 15 Dec 1778. Mary Creswell, spinster, married Robert Cummins, 4 Jan 1790
We will now move to the next ASSUMED family connection, that of the parents of Isabelle Creswell who married our assumed kinsman ELEAZAR CUMMINGS.
The book A HISTORY OF WASHINGTON Co., GEORGIA lists 10 children of ELEAZAR CUMMINGS & ISABELLA CRESWELL, but unfortunately does not name any of them except three males: ELEAZAR 1784-1860, ROBERT 1790-1857 and DAVID, 1795-1862. The article states that ELEAZAR SR was a Revolutionary War soldier, and that his father was ROBERT CUMMINGS, 1700-1780 who emigrated from Belfast, Ireland to New Jersey. Robert's widow, JANE, and some of his children migrated to Ohio.
Eleazar, SR and other children by the first wife, PEGGY, moved south. Eleazar, 1757-1814, lived in N. C. where he marr ISABEL CRESWELL, 5-29-1759 - 1832. With three children they settled in Washington Co., GA around 1790. He was a surveyor. He died in Ohio on a visit to his relatives.
