John Lawrence WOODSIDE MD

____ - ____

Repository ID Number: I7120

  • OCCUPATION: Planter
  • RESIDENCE: Woodville, SC
  • RESOURCES: See: [S14]
Father: James Drayton WOODSIDE
Mother: Jane WOODSIDE

Family 1 : Ellen Permelia CHARLES
  1. + Mary Jane Permelia (Mollie) WOODSIDE
  2. + Eliza Drayton WOODSIDE

Notes

They were friends of the Drayton family of Drayton Hall and named their eldest son James Drayton. The Drayton name has passed down through the family for generations. James Drayton Woodside married his first cousin, Jane Woodside, and in 1830 they moved to Greenville Co. Their son, Lawrence Woodside a country doctor and farmer, married Ellen Charles and lived at Woodville, about 5 miles southwest of Carolina Brandon.

He had thirteen children, four of his sons, Edward, Robert, David, and John, were financial geniuses and became noted business entrepreneurs. They founded Woodside Mills in 1908 at Fountain Inn, SC, which for many years was the largest cotton mill in the world under one roof. They also established a bank in Greenville and in 1923 built South Carolina's first skyscraper, the 17-story Woodside National Bank, followed in 1924 by the famed Poinsett hotel, both at Greenville.

They invested in noted enterprises with New York partners, they helped to develop Myrtle Beach in the mid-20's by constructing the Ocean Forest Hotel and Pine Lakes International Country Club and Golf Course. They planned and financed three other great projects; the first lighted "white way" on King's Highway, the Inland Waterway, and the important LaFayette Bridge spanning the Wacamaw and Pee Dee rivers at Georgetown. They lost the Woodside Mills and most of their fortunes during the Depression, but their visionary works stand as their monuments. Historians consider them among the state's greatest benefactors.
