"Son of Christopher and Ruth (DEVONSHIRE) Tilghman, was b. 1650 in Accomac Co., VA. He left a family Bible or journal, which passed to his son Robert. Roger located on 1060 acres of land in Bristol Parish, Charles City Co., VA Apr 20 1689 (Records of the Landoffice, Richmond VA). This patent was for the transportation of 22 persons into the Colony. This was in the form of headrights. The place selected was known as Fort Tillman, Appomattox River, at Noneus-a-Nock (Monk's Neck), thence to Gravelly Run. This is now in Dinwiddie Co. After settling in Virginia Roger changed the spelling of his name from Tilghman to Tillman or at least it so appears on some of the existing records. His children did not all immediately change the spelling of the name as will be found from tombstones in NC." [S869]
