 Hugh Herrell  b. abt. 1760-65

According to the census records of Burke, Yancey and Mitchell Counties, NC, John Herrell was born about 1795, probably in Burke county, NC. It is thought that John Herrell was a son of Hugh Herrell a very early settler in the mountains of Western NC.. The name of Hugha Herrell can be found on early petitions in Burke county.. According to Herrell family tradition, Hugh drowned in a swollen stream during a flash flood somewhere near Big Rock Creek. This has not been proven.  Hugh Herrell had several children and John Herrell, born abt. 1795, is believed to be one of those sons.

John Herrell 1795-1874

John Herrell married Annah Campbell before 1820, probably in Burke County, NC. John and Annah had five children; Rebeckah, Hugh, Simon, Lucy and May. All except Rebeckah are named in Johns' will of 1874..  It is not clear whether John Herrell died in 1874 or if he wrote his will at that time and died later..

Hugh Herrell, Heral  1820-1899

Hugh Herrell, Heral married Lydia Charlotte McIntire, d/o Joseph Mcintire, in NC about 1840.. They had fourteen children one of which died at birth. At least three others did before reaching maturity.. Joseph Hamalton Heral was oldest of the two surviving sons, William was the other.  About 1858 Hugh Heral moved in a covered wagon to Washington co., Va. Afterwards he bought a farm in Poore Valley where he and Charlotte lived and are buried.. Hugh Heral (Herald) fought in the Civil War and while he was gone from home one of the armies took all of his corn from the corn crib.. With no feed for the hogs, Charlotte and the women in the valley were forced to slaughter the hogs and preserve the meat.. Hugh Heral investigated the idea of exploring for oil on his Poor Valley farm but it was his son, William who finally arranged to have a test well drilled after his father had died.. They found no oil but did get a good supply of water.. Hugh Heral raised sheep, cattle and hogs for sale and grew tobacco.. One family researcher learned that he also taught singing and may have done some preaching.. It is believed that he was of the Dunkard religion as was his brother, Simon, who remained in Mitchell co., NC...

Joseph Hamalton Heral

Joseph Hamalton Heral s/o Hugh Herrell, Heral and Lydian Charlotte McIntire was born in Yancey co., NC.. He moved with his father to Washington co., Va about 1858 and it was there that he met and married Mary Jane Roberts, d/o Henry Roberts and Elizabeth "Betsy"Warren. Joe and Mary Jane Heral had two children, Milton Houston Heral and Mary Jane Heral who died at birth.. Marys father, Henry Roberts, gave her and Joseph a four hundred acre farm on Rattle Creek and the North Fork Holston River.. They built a home on the farm and spent the rest of their lives there.. When Vinie Heral Roberts, Joes' sister, and her husband, John Roberts died within two weeks of each other, Joseph and Mary went and got their five small children and raised them. They also kept some of the McIntire children who were related to Joseph.. Joseph was reputed to have been a very strong man and once when he found a yearling steer which had eaten stagger weed in the river bottom and couldn't walk, he got the steer on his back and carried it up a steep hill to the barn where he planned to treat it but when he slid the animal from his back two of its legs broke and he lost it anyway.. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and died after throwing a three hundred pound hog over a fence. Joseph H. Heral was only fifty four years old when he died.. He and Mary are buried on the Heral farm on Rattle Creek, Washington county, Virginia.

Milton Houston Heral 1876-1920

Milton Houston Heral was the only son of Joseph and Mary Roberts Heral and he didn't waste a lot of time getting a family started.. At the age of fifteen he met Mary Ellen Sledd d/o James Daniel Sledd and Elizabeth Smith.. They ran off to Bristol, TN and got married and had seventeen children! Fourteen of them married and had children, Milton and Mary had over eighty grandchildren! Milton died at age 44 in 1920 at Abingdon , Virginia.

Joseph Daniel Hearl 1897-1988

Joseph Daniel Hearl was the third child born to Milton and Mary Heral. He married Clara Amanda Pippin d/o Newton King Pippin and Susan Alice Minnick This union produced seven children, five of whom are still living, G. Lee Hearl among them.. more on this family later.....
