NEWSIES - A 'newsie' was a boy who sold newspapers at a street corner, as opposed to having a "paper route" which came later in time.  Disney studios made a movie musical based on the 1899 historical Newsboys' Strike, as reported in the New York Times - one hundred years ago this month.  Excerpt from the New York Times, 1 Aug 1899: "Newsboys Up for Blackmail. Held on Trial on Charges Growing Out of a Meeting with World and Journal Representatives.  Before Magistrate Mott, in the Centre Street Court, yesterday, Edward Fitzgerald ... Henry Butler ... and "Jack" Harney ..., all newsboys, were charged with extortion and blackmail ... "     Disney's movie musical is available at most rental stores.

OLD HARNEY MANSION - new group is formed to make renovations on the summer home of General William Selby Harney, in Sullivan, MO.  Friends of General Harney House, Inc., P.O. Box 389, Sullivan MO 63080.  They need to raise over 1 million dollars for this effort.
