Harneys from County Roscommon, Ireland
| Origin of the surname: According to "Irish Names and Surnames" by Rev. Patrick Woulfe, the Gaelic name OhAtairne has been spelled O'Haherny, O'Harney, Harney, and Hartney. It descends from Atairne meaning fatherly, paternal. Woulfe says it is a rare and scattered surname originally found in south Roscommon, Ireland, and later found in Counties Tipperary and Waterford. For more information about the surname click on Heraldry. |
If your branch of the Harney Family descends from County Roscommon, this is the place to find information about them. More information will be added periodically. (I have LOTS more).
If you have done Irish research, you will know that the records are very scarce before 1800. Most of the records you will find here are from 1800 or later. If your branch of the Harneys immigrated before this time, go back to the Home Page. Some Harney families were already in America in the 1600s. See Early Harneys in America and Descendants of Timothy Harney and Elizabeth Green(e).

Tithe Applotment Survey - Harneys listed by
Parish and Townland
Tithes were a tax charged to persons of all faiths to support the Church of Ireland.
Tithe's were due from certain types of land holders, therefore this list does not
include all persons (for example those living in cities would not be listed).

This valuation was conducted to determine how much was due in taxes by each land
owner, or land holder. Like the Tithe Applotment survey, above, it does not cover
