Michael J. Harney was part of the rush for gold in 1898 & 1899. He is listed at the Chilkoot Checkpoint to the Yukon 31 May 1898, and was granted a mine on
Dominion Creek, Yukon territory, May 1899 (Grant #622). It appears the family later settled in Florida. Mike Sullivan, his sister's husband also a miner.

MALACHI L. HARNEY, (1895-1932) Law Enforcement
Malachi had an illustrious career as Treasury Agent and drug enforcement agent. In 1947 he
was named Chief Coordinator of the Treasury Enforcement Agencies. In 1957 he was named
Technical Assisant to the Secretary for Enforcement. He was in charge of officers handling
narcotics peddlers, smugglers, tax evaders and counterfeiters. In addition to direction
the training of Treasruy agents, agencies under his control included the Narcotics Bureau,
the Alcohol Tax Unit, Customs and the Secret Service. In 1959, after his retirement from
public service, he was named head of the Illinois Division of Narcotic Control. Malachi's
brother James G. Harney was a Federal agent during the prohibition era. While searching
for the operators of an illegal still in Minnesota, James was shot to death in 1932. That
was the same year that Malachi helped build the federal income tax case that sent gangster
Al Capone to prision. Malachi died in late February 1984, in Edina, Minnesota. He
co-authored the following books on law enforcement with John C. Cross: "The informer
in law enforcement" 1968; and "The narcotic officer's notebook," 1973.
Malachi was born June 1895 in Minnesota, the son of James Harney and Anna (Ryan). He
married Gladys ---. No children. He died 1 March 1984, Edina, MN. - From the New York Times, census records, and obituaries.
