THOMAS H. HARNEY (1826-1911)
Born 4 July 1826, County Waterford, Ireland, the son of William Harney and Catherine
(Mangan), who lived in the Portlaw/Ballyduff area. He immigrated to the US on the ship
"Alert", arriving in New York on 5 May 1852. He lived in Ohio for three years,
then settled in Iowa City, Iowa in 1855. Thomas became a US citizen on 6 Oct 1857. He was
married to Julia Power(s) on 16 July 1855, at Iowa City (One source says 18 June). Julia
was also born in County Waterford (1829), having sailed to Liverpool, then on to
Philadelphia, arriving 18 Apr 1847. She lived in Wilmington, Delaware for a time, then
moved to Iowa City with her father. She met Thomas Harney in Iowa City and married him on
18 June 1855. Thomas and Julia reportedly have eight (8) children, but I know the names of
only seven: William Patrick (b.1855); Thomas M (b.1857); Mary Anne (b.c.1861), who married
Mr. DRISCOLL of Chicago; Catherine, known as Kitty & Katie (Mrs. Wm H) McGUIRE; James
(b.1869); Julia Harney (b.1873), who married Thos. E. MORRISSEY; and Nellie Harney. Ref.
Census records, and correspondence with Arlene Pitlick Graham, S.F., CA. Thought to be
related to William M. Harney and James Martin Harney, also of Iowa, but exact connections
are not known at this time. Ref. 1880, 1900, & 1920 Census records and correspondence
