"I come from Germany and I did some research on the name 'Lopp'. It obviously comes from 'loppen' which is Old High German (spoken around 900-1300) and 'loppen' means simply 'to run'. Thus somebody with the name 'Lopp' was obviously a person who brought messages from one town/person to another, a messanger.

My understanding of the LOPP name refers to them as a people, i.e., the Laps from Lapland and depending on how they moved about and interacted with southern or Germanic peoples of Europe, they would call them, the Lopps. The story goes about one or two thousand years ago a famine in Lapland forced indigenous bands of northern peoples into areas lower in Europe, possibly due to lower numbers of reindeer. They did not assimilate well and kept to themselves so the Lap/Lopp name might have addressed a clan-like group. Over time it became a surname. If this is true it is ironic that Thomas Lopp of Indiana introduced raising reindeer to Alaskan natives as a means of self-support, (per the Lopp's of Harrison Co). Sort of full circle. Originally these people would have been short, dark and stocky, but after sleeping around with other Europeans for a few hundred years those genetic traits are gone and all that is left are some Caucasians with that name. This information came to me by way of an elderly gentleman with the Lopp name from Arizona about twenty years ago, so he'd be nearly 100 by now, if alive. I come from a line of Lopps whose first names are often Jacob or John. Since this information is nearly impossible to verify and happy enough to resolve it as Lopp Legend.
