Ernest Walter Lorraine Brind died on board the Lancastria in 1940. The ship was evacuating troops and civilians when it was sunk by german planes off of the coast of St Nazaire in southern france taking 3,000 of the 6,000 company with her.

EWL Brind served as a sapper with the Royal Engineers.
