O'Hanlon boar facing right 1: Famous Hanlons O'Hanlon boar facing left

  • John O'Hanlon, 1821 - 1905.
Born in Stradbally, County Laois (Queen's County) John O'Hanlon was studying for the priesthood when his parents moved the family to the United States. There he wrote an "Irish Emigrant's Guide to the United States" and was ordained in the Catholic Church, working in St. Louis, Missouri until his return to Ireland in 1853. He was a very learned man who shared his vast knowledge of religious and Irish history by writing. He wrote an impressive body of work of which the best known is his ten volume opus magnus, "Lives of the Irish Saints" (published Dublin, 1875). Dr. Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin, described him as "a man who worked so hard at his pastoral duties that men wondered how he could have found time to write anything, and who wrote so much that men wondered how he could have done any missionary work."
  • Edward "Ned" Hanlan, 1855 - 1908
Ned Hanlan learned to row at an early age: he crossed Toronto Harbour daily from his home on Toronto Island to reach George Street Public School on the mainland. At 5'8" and 155 pounds he became a sporting legend in 1879 when he defeated the 6' 200 lb English champion, William Elliott, by an astonishing eleven lengths. From 1876 to 1886 he rowed all over the world and lost only six of 300 races. Over half a million dollars were bet on him in England in 1880 against the reigning world champion, Australian Edward Trickett. But whenever Hanlan's lead increased he would stop to take a drink of water and wave to the crowd. Winning by over seven seconds, Hanlan became world champion and London, Toronto and New York went wild. Still known as probably the greatest sculler of all time, there is a statue of Hanlan in Toronto Harbour and the Western end of Toronto Island is still called Hanlan's point. • Edward "Ned" Hugh Hanlon, 1857-1937
Baseball Hall of Famer Ned Hanlon became a star when he turned around the Baltimore Orioles. Bottom of the league in 1892, they went on to win under his management in 1894-96 and became one of the most famous 19th-century baseball teams. Hanlon was such an autocrat that Orioles owner Harry Vonderhorst wore a button that said "Ask Hanlon." Photo courtesy of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

  • Alfred Charles Hanlon, 1866-1944
Described by the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography as "one of the most outstanding criminal advocates in New Zealand's history", Alfred Charles Hanlon's oratory made him a courtroom legend. Over 6 feet tall, he was a keen actor and sportsman in his leisure time, and his dramatic talents and imposing stature certainly contributed to his success. He was somewhat unconventional in his enjoyment of gambling, and his dislike of social class, snobbery and religion but contributed his time generously to the community: as president of the Dunedin Orphans' Club and the Dunedin Shakespeare Club, to name but two. His rise to public prominence was in no small part due to his representation in 1895 of the infamous 'Winton Baby Farmer', Minnie Dean, the only woman to be executed (hanged) in New Zealand. His career spanned over half a century, covering everything from criminal law and government investigations to divorce cases. He was appointed King's Counsel in 1930.

Alfred Charles Hanlon was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 1 Aug 1866 to William Dudgeon Hanlon (who had emigrated from County Donegal, Ireland in 1862) and Elizabeth Louisa Bingham. He was married in Dunedin on 20 Jun 1894 to Mary Ann "Polly" Hudson and had three daughters and a son. He died in Dunedin on 6 Feb 1944, aged 77.

  • John O'Hanlon, 1876 - 1960.
A great chess player, J.J. O'Hanlon won the first ICU Irish championship title in 1913, becoming champion on nine occasions in all, the last in 1940. He represented his country in the Warsaw Olypics of 1935 (the first in which Ireland competed) and the 1939 Olympics in Buenos Aires. In his obituary in the Irish Times J.J.Walsh described how "abroad too, J.J.O'Hanlon was well known and in Hastings, Amsterdam, Moscow, Prague and Munich the disclosure of my Irish nationality inevitably prompted the question 'How is Mr. O'Hanlon?' ". Photo courtesy of The Irish Chess Archive.

  • Edward "Ned" Michael Hanlon, 1887 - 1952
Born 1 Oct 1887, Ned Hanlon represented his birthplace, innercity Paddington, for the Australian Labor Party as the Member for Ithaca 1926-52. He rose to Home Secretary 1932-35; Secretary for Health and Home Affairs 1935-44; Treasurer 1944-46; and finally Premier of Queensland, Chief Secretary and Vice-President of the Executive Council 1946-52 - the post he held at his death in January 1952. Ned Hanlon's nineteen and a half years are still the record for longest term as a cabinet minister. (Contributed by M. Lorcan.)
  • Dr. C. Rollins Hanlon, b. 1915
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on 8 Feb 1915, Dr. Hanlon's academic career started with an A.B. degree from Loyola Univeristy in Baltimore in 1934. An M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University Medical School led to fellowships in surgery at Johns Hopkins and the University of California, and Professorships at Johns Hopkins (1950) and St. Louis University (1950-69). His specialty was pioneering open heart surgery, and he was present at Dr. Christian Barnard's historic conference on 28 Dec 1967 to hear first hand of the world's first hearst transplant (see Dr. Hanlon's photo at the NIH archives with commentary). Dr. Hanlon was appointed a director of the ACS (American College of Surgeons) in 1969, retiring as its president in 1988. He was also a founding member of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, President of the Society of University Surgeons 1958, Chairman of the American Board of Surgery 1966-67, President of the American Surgical Association 1981-82. Dr. Hanlon is honoured at St. Louis University by the Hanlon-Willman Surgical Society. He and his wife, Dr. Margaret H. Hanlon, currently live in Chicago and have eight children. Drs. Hanlon & Hanlon were awarded the 2004 Distinguished Philanthropist Award by the American College of Surgeons.

  • George Hanlon, b. 1917
Awarded Personality of the Year for 2002 by the Victorian Racing Media Association, 2003 saw octogenarian thoroughbred trainer George Hanlon induced into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and a stunning Sydney Cup win. Hanlon's many years of success training "stayers" cover countless Australian majors wins including the Cox plate and three Melbourne Cups. Three agonising photo finish losses in the Caulfield Cup saw him return in 2000 with a resounding win and the track record. At the award ceremony of 2002 he was referred to as "a great trainer, and a true Gentleman of the Turf". Photograph courtesy of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Charles Hanlon had a total of three terms in the Senate from his surprise victory over Senate Majority Leader Holdstrom in 1975 until the end of 1986.
  • Justice Rory O'Hanlon, 1923 - 2002 (RIP)
Appointed to the Irish High Court bench in 1981; first chairman of the Arbitration Board; Professor of Criminal and Constitutional Law at University College Dublin. A member of Opus Dei, Justice O'Hanlon maintained his pro-life stance at some personal cost. In 1992 he was appointed president of the Law Reform Commission, but was controversially removed four weeks later after asserting that he would not support ratification of the European Union's Maastricht Treaty if it made abortion available in Ireland. He later sued and received a substantial settlement. Photograph courtesy of RTE Interactive News.
