September 13, l894Uncle MALEY MCDONALD died at his home in Kellerton at 7 o'clock Saturday evening, September 8, after an illness of about two weeks. MR. MCDONALD has been in poor health for several years, but most of the time had been able to be around. He was one of our oldest and most respected citizens, having lived in Iowa the greater part of his life.
MALEY MCDONALD was born in Madison County, Ohio, May l6, l823, and departed this life September 8, l894, being 7l years, 3 months and 23 days old. He was a devout Christian and a member of the order of Odd Fellows, having joined the Lodge at Decatur City, on December 26, l863, of which he was a faithful member until a few years ago, when he transferred his membership to Lodge at Kellerton, for convenience.
His last request was that Decatur Lodge, No. l02, the members of which he had mingled with for so many years, should have charge of his body and conduct the burial rites at the grave, which was carried out with a tribute of respect to themselves and their dead brother.
Deceased leaves only one son and eight grandchildren to mourn his loss.
There were eighty-two members in attendance from the Decatur, Lamoni, Mt. Ayr and Kellerton Lodges.

December 20, l888OBITUARY -- MRS. MARY F. MCDONALD, was born November l3, l824, in Franklin County, Ohio. Her maiden name was MARY FERGUSON. In l843 she was united in marriage with MAHLON MCDONALD at her old Ohio home. Four children were born of this union, two of whom survive. In l850 she came to Iowa and for five years the family was not permanently settled. In l855 they came to Decatur County. A final move was made to Kellerton in l885 and in this pleasant home on December 9, l888, she fell asleep in the precious hope of the Savior.
Her life was almost inimitable, by reason of her strong hold upon the eternal verities. Her hope undimmed grew brighter until the dawn of heavenly day swallowed up her faith in the vision of immortality. For 46 years she had lived a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her virtues were but the reflected light of her Redeemer's righteousness. Those who knew her loved her unceasingly. Her ministries of love and mercy leave her name graven upon many grateful hearts. If every loving deed and word of hers were to become a flower upon her tomb, that floral monument would touch the skies and fill the world with sweet perfume.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. MATHENY, who spoke feelingly and comfortingly from Rev. l4:23, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them".
Her character and the influence she leaves behind her fully exemplify these golden words. There is no better thing in this world than to have lived right and be sadly missed from the old accustomed places. The writer realizes how much we will miss the dear familiar face of MRS. MCDONALD when returning to the old home she loved so well. Standing by her bedside at her near departure he saw and heard the glorious signs of the Christian's victory over death. So may it be with us all when we enter the shades of that night whose coming morn shall be in paradise.

September 11, l890IN MEMORIAM:
MRS. M.A. BATHE, wife of G.R. BATHE, died September 3, l890, of paralysis of the throat.
She was born in Ohio, February 4, l844; moved with her parents here in l855, and was married October l2, l865. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of twelve years and has lived a devoted Christian ever since. The funeral service was conducted by REV. MATHEW, of Kellerton, from a text in Corinthians. Such is the brief record which has brought sad tidings to many sorrowing hearts. How unfathomable are the counsels of the Almighty and his ways past finding out. Though there is much to soothe and alleviate the pangs of grief when the Christian dies, yet when the good, kind and true, in the halcyon days of early existence, when the world is all beauty and the heart is all love, and like the deceased, summoned by the King of Terrors, to go hence, oh! oh! It is hard to endure.
The heart sickens, the fountains of the soul gush out with tears and the spirits sink; and although Christianity encourages and friends endeavor to console, yet the tide of sorrow washes over all, and nature, like Jacob of old, refuses to be comforted. Long, long years will roll by before her memory will be obliterated from the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Yet we have the pleasing thought to console us, that her spirit mingles with voices in songs of praise, with millions that have gone before, around the great white throne of the Eternal One. Her body has fallen asleep, but God has taken her home.
Among the many tokens of respect, shown by kind friends, the family of the deceased desire to acknowledge with grateful remembrance, the floral offerings sent by the firm and employees of Younker Bros., Des Moines, illustrating youth, manhood and age. They were placed on the grave by loving hands as a last respect to a departed wife and mother.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband, G.R. BATHE; father, MALAY MCDONALD; one brother, WINFIELD MCDONALD; daughters, NORA, RENA and CARRIE; sons, IRVIN, AVON and CHARLEY and a host of friends.
E.B. TEALE.

MRS. M.A. BATHE, died of only a few days illness with paralysis of the throat. What a sudden shock to the friends and neighbors. It seems to be almost impossible that such is the case, but she is gone. MRS. BATHE whose life was as pure as a rose and a bright and shining light, in all the variations of this life; her life was an example of Divine thought that placed her far in advance on the Heavenly plane. She was a woman of rare ability, though quiet in her ways, possessed of fine intellect, and far excelled in memory of any I ever knew. Her wisdom in the guidance of her family and household affairs had placed her name world wide in fame. But she is gone. How sad to think it is so.
Her funeral was preached by REV. MATHENA, who showed the glory there is in the glories beyond happy thought that we may meet again.
Note: Margaret Ann (McDonald) Bathe was the daughter of Malay McDonald.

December 24, l908MRS. LENNIE HAINTZE nee MCDONALD, daughter of E.W. MCDONALD, formerly of this county, died at Seattle, Wash., December l0th, at 2 o'clock a.m. at the hospital. She suffered intense agony for a period of l4 days of tumor of the bowels. She was born near Tuskeego, January 24, l87l, making her 36 years, l0 months and l4 days at the time of her departure. She spent a part of her young life in the vicinity of Tuskeego, afterwards moving with her grandparents, MALEY MCDONALD and wife, to Kellerton. She remained with them until their death, she then kept house for her father and one brother, who is now in the Philippines. She was married June ll, l893, to CHARLES A. HAINTZE, in Kellerton.
She united with the M.E. Church at the age of l2 years and was always a constant worker. While in Kellerton she was one of the prominent members of that place and when anything was needed to be done the church never was afraid to call on LENNIE as she was called by one and all, for she was always found ready and willing to do her duty. She, with her husband, moved to Seattle, Washington, about four years ago and was still there at the time of her death.
Those present at her bedside in her last few days, were her husband, father, step-mother, brother and family. She constantly begged them to do something for her as she was too young to die. She leaves many relatives and friends who have been made very sad by her death. She was buried December l2th, at l0 a.m., in a most beautiful place where she had often visited and had remarked so many times "How beautiful." Her casket was literally strewn with flowers.

April 20, l905OBITUARY.
We were sorry to learn the sad news of the death of Mrs. Oma LILLIE, formerly an old resident of this county. She and her daughter, Mary, left, two years ago last spring, for their new home in Harline, Wash., to live her last days near her sons. A short time after going west she became afflicted with a cancer, which resulted in her death, April 6. Aunt Oma, as she was called, came here in an early day. Her first husband was killed in the war of '61 to '65.
She afterward married Mr. R. P. LILLIE, who was widely known in this country. She was a member of the M. E. Church and lived a devoted christian life until her death. She always had a word for her Master wherever she was. Her loss is greatly felt by all here as well as her children and friends in the west. We greatly sympathize with them in their affliction.
Note: Naomi J. Montgomery was the widow of the Civil War soldier William McDonald (1827 - 1863), and mother of three Iowa-born brothers who all went to live in Washington state: Albert McDonald (1854 - 1933), George M. McDonald (1857 - 1937) and John W. McDonald (1862 - 1954). She later married R.P. Lillie and had a daughter Mary Myrtle Lillie (born c. 1877).
