Robert Qua Kenyon
With his tall silk hat and gold-headed cane
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
From the story about the silk hat and gold-headed cane in:
Robert Qua Kenyon  1837-1894; Mary Amelia (Dixson) Kenyon  1843-1935 Family History
by Ross Q. Bingham (grandson).

See excerpt below photo.

Note:  My Dad and uncles have used both DIXON and DIXSON.  I, too, have found both spellings.

He and his brothers bought a farm near Ripon, Wisconsin about 1860.  When he left New York to go west, his friends questioned him about the wisdom of such a move.  He told them that he would make a fortune and that when he returned, he would be wearing a tall silk hat and carrying a gold-headed cane.* I saw a picture of him as a young man with dark hair and beard, wearing the silk hat and carrying the cane.

He returned to New York to be married to Mary A. Dixson.  He had not made a fortune, but did return wearing the silk hat and carrying the cane, had his picture taken, and that was the end of the hat and cane.
