Hot Cross Buns

 

 

Ingredients

 

  1lb Plain Flour 1 oz Yeast
  2 oz Sugar 6 oz Sultanas or Mix of Currants, Sultanas & mixed peel
  1/2 pint Milk 2 oz Butter
  2 Eggs 1 tspn Mixed Spice
  Pinch Salt  
 

 

Method

 

  Dissolve yeast in a little of the milk and mix all other dry ingredients to a sandy consistency, then add milk, yeast mix and eggs, mixing into a dough.

Cover with a cloth and leave in a warm place to rise. (about 1/2 hour.)

Divide dough into 12 pieces, mould into round buns and place on a greased baking tray. Set in a warm place to rise.

Mark each bun with a cross with the back of a knife or pipe on a cross with a soft mixture of flour and water.

Bake in a moderate oven till done. (15-20 mins.) remove from oven and glaze tops by
brushing with a sugar/water syrup while still hot.
