BRUCE HAMLIN: It seems that Chenoa is in the South America District of Bell County Kentucky, once part of Whitley County, Kentucky. South America became part of Bell county in 1876. Today Chenoa is still a very small village and is located on Rt 190. Not more than a speck in the road. Chenoa is a poor community situated in a very small valley. There are two cemeteries near Chenoa. The New Vine Cemetery on Rt 3485 and the Jackie Partin Cemetery on Rt 3484 near Frakes. The Jackie Partin Cemetery has many, many graves that are marked with nothing more than a local flat stone stuck on end in the ground with no marking at all on the stones. Frakes is like Chenoa but a little bigger. It is located South West of Chenoa on Rt 190. Frakes and Henderson Settlement seem to be the same place.Neither Chenoa or Frakes is marked by a marker. The only way to tell that you are there is to look for the general store because it has the town name on it. There is a marker that has Henderson Settlement on it. Kitty & I visited these communities on 23 Nov 1999.

TOM HAMLIN: Aunt Delilah gave me some inforation one time and says William Hamlin owned a General Store, was educated, his father's name was John, had 8 half Brothers, born at Mt Top, buried at Chenoa. Buried without a marker.

SOUTH AMERICA CHRONOLOG by Ruby Partin Lambdin A.B., M.A.
1876--District No. 9 "South America" was cut off from Whitley County and became a part of Bell whose county seat was more accessible.
When District No. 9 was cut off there were 22 family names, 37 families:
John Davis .............. Elijah Lyons ................ Billy Partin (wife Maggie)
Russ Davis ...............James Henderson ........ Ephraim Partin
Joe Davis ................ Rev. David Mason ...... Evan Partin
Beth Fuson ............. John Mason ................ George Partin
Bill Daugerty ........... James Maiden ............. John A. Partin
Green Gibson ......... Shelt Maiden ............... John J. Partin
Cal Hubbards ......... Henry Murray .............. Manse Partin
Jonathan Hurst ........ Richard Murray ........... Winfield Scott Partin
Bill Hamlin .............. I.A. Overton ................ Wesley Powers
Bob Jones .............. Esau Owens ................. John Shepherd
Riley Jones ............. Alvis Partin ................... Harve Sparks
George Lambdin ..... Tom Wilson

Tom's dad was Troy Hamlin. When he was small Jack and Maudie had him at Williams house for supper. Troy was around 3 or 4. Troy was born 1907, so this must have been around 1910 or 1911. anyway, William stabbed Troy in the hand with a fork. Being a small child he must have reached for something. This caused a rift between Maudie and William. I guess she never went back, but Jack did.

SPECULATION: It is my belief that William is the son of John Jackson Hamlin and Rebecca Monhallen. I feel that this is correct for the following reasons.
1. William's ages on the following census records:
1850 Whitley 4 (home with father) b. 1846
1860 Whitley 14 (home with father) b. 1846
1870 Josh Bell 23 (Married to Delila) b. 1847
1880 Claiborne 33 (Married to Delila) b. 1847
1900 Bell 52 (Married to Jane) b. Oct 1847
2. In the 1880 Claiborne County, Tennessee census, William and family are living next to Amey Hamblin the widow of Wren Hambin. William the son of John Jackson Hamlin would be the second cousin to Wren. It is my belief that our William was there taking care of his second cousins widow and her family. There is no way that two Hamblin's would end up living next to each other unless they were related.
3. Tom Hamlin's aunt Delilah stated that the father of our William is John Hamblin and that William had 7-8 half brothers. With this piece of information our William fits into the John Jackson Hamblin family very well. This would give him 8 brothers even though aunt Delilah reported half brothers.
4. In 1876 Bill Hamblin was among 37 families that became part of Bell County.

William married (1) Delilah (Delpha) HENDERSON, daughter of William "Bill" J. HENDERSON and Louisa PARTIN, about 1865. Delilah was born in 1836/1840 in , Knox, Kentucky, USA. She died Died in her early to mid 40's.

Delila died of T.B in her 40's.

TOM HAMLIN: Buried without a marker.
