GIBSON FAMILY

William E. Gibson was born about. 1841 to Peter Gibson and Mary Ewan of Trinity- Gask , Parish , Perthshire, Scotland . He is listed on the 1841 census age 10 months. There is another 10 month old child in the house Margaret Ewan , it is not known if she was a sister to William, I suspect that the E. seen in some documents and Williams obit ,could stand for Ewan , His mothers maiden name as a second name , a common tradition.

The other family members at "Kirkhill" Trinity Gask Parish  the census of 1841 are

Peter Gibson age 60  farmer

Mary Gibson -age 35 wife

James- 11

Peter -10

David -5

Mary -3

William -10 months

There were also 4 servants Diana Mc Ilvred age 20 , Grace Crerar-age 15 , Ann McDougall –age 20 , and another surname MCDonald , also a 10 month old baby girl Margaret Ewan. . Living in an Outhouse on property was Peter McIlvred age 16 .It looks like there were also several cottages on the property. Kirkhill still appears on map of Trinity Gask today although I can’t find any information about it. There is also another daughter mentioned on last page of census for Peter Gibson,  Elizabeth b. 20 Dec 1833 in Trinity Gask, Perth, Scotland, maybe it meant she had died within the year 1841 ?

By the 1851 census of the same area the family is gone. Peter Gibson must have died after 1851 but before 1859 or his death would be recorded .Peter Gibson the son must have also died before 1859 as no further records can be found for him. There is no christening  record for our William Gibson . There was a breakaway from  the church in the early 1840's.  William's  nieces and nephews were christened in the United Presbyterian Church , which was formed by the people who had broken away from the church so William's family must have been part of this movement. The 1841 census mentioned that the were families of dissenters in the parish the Gibsons were probably one of those families.

William Gibson was still in Glasgow  Scotland in 1861 when he was a witness at his brother David Ross Gibson's wedding . He may have been in B.C. as early as 1864 . He is listed in the 1871 Directory for Victoria

William married Helen Eliza DeBeck between 1868 and 1870

Their first daughter Mary Leonora Gibson was born in Victoria. They had 2 more daughter's Edith Josephine and Olivia Helen (my gr.grandmother).Helen died shortly after giving birth to Olivia the family has it that she died of consumption. William married again on January 29, 1883 to Annie McDonald. This marriage certificate gives his parents as Peter Gibson and Mary Ewan and give his birthplace as Trinity Gask ,Perthshire ,Scotland. William and Annie had 2 more children a son William Richard and a daughter Pauline Mae. William Gibson Sr. died in 1886 and his wife Annie died a year later in 1887. There is no record of what happened to Pauline ,I suspect she was adopted and her name changed. William was taken in by a George and Margaret McGregor
