Hamilton and Aikens Families

In 1847 William Hamilton came to Quebec to escape  the Famine in Ireland and settled in the Parish of St Gabriel de Valcartier, which today is the Valcartier Military Camp. He married Isabelle Leithead, the daughter of Adam Leithead and Isabel Laing. It is not known how he was related to the other Hamiltons of Valcartier. Archibald Hamilton, the head of the other large Hamilton family, signed William and Isabella's marriage certificate--this points to some relationship, but what? The family remained in Quebec until the late 1800's and early 1900's, when many of the family headed to the U.S. and Western Canada. Some remain in Quebec today.

Aikens

David Aikens came to St. Gabriel de Valcartier in the early 1830's. There was a William Aikens there before him--most likely his brother. He married Mary Broome, the daughter of Isaac Broome and Rosey McElroy or MCCray Many of David Aikens sons and daughters left Valcartier in the 1870's. Some stayed till the 1900's, and there are some still in Quebec today. The descendants of David Aikens Jr. and William Aikens use the surname spelling ‘Aikins,’ and most live in Ontario. Some Aikens moved to New Hampshire and Chicago, Illinois in the U.S.

William Hamilton married Janet Aiken' s, David and Mary's youngest daughter on March 31, 1877 in at Quebec Weslayan ,Methodist Church ,Quebec City.

Webb Family

Ruth Violet Hamilton their daughter married John Thomas Webb on April 23, 1906, Halifax ,Halifax, Nova Scotia. I believe he was among the soldiers being sent back to England in that year. They obviously eloped as they both lied about their ages and Violet lied about where her parents resided .I have never been able to find Thomas and family in England ,He gives his place of birth as Southampton. I believe he had 1 sister but have no idea where she lived ,He gave his parents names as William John Webb and Hannah Pace The marriage was witnessed by Henry and Hannah Wood. Since the family was all still in Valcartier Quebec. They returned to Quebec to live where John got a carter's license in St. Madelaine,an area of Quebec City,

William John their first child was born on April 28, 1907 he was baptized in Quebec ,St. Peter's Anglican Church ,the record is signed John James Webb , Express driver ,witness William James and Elizabeth MacFarlane

. Lillie Bertha Isabella their second child was born Jan 28, 1908,and baptized at St. Matthews Church Quebec city  Jan 1909 Mrs. H.J.Wood, witness. W>J>Macfarlane witness

Elizabeth Ruth Violet was born in Fort Frances Ontario on Oct. 18, 1909 . (Cannot locate birth reg)

Violet's (as the family called her) parents William and Janet Hamilton had left Quebec for the Fort Frances and the Rainy River District of Ontario in Feb. of 1909, to join their daughter Mary Rose and her husband William Jewell who came there years before. The Webb's must have followed them and all the rest of the family that came out west as well..

The 1911 census Ruth Violet and John Thomas Webb are living in Fort Frances Rainy River District, Ontario ,close to Violet's family .

Their next 3 children  Albert Arthur Andrew born Aug 24 1913,   David George Hubert b. 1914 died age 9 months and Herbert Charles Henry b. Aug 12 1915 were all born in Fort Frances.

The Webb's seemed to be living quite happily and were building a large house for them all when WWI started. John Thomas Webb signed up for service on March 9, 1917 but only served six months before he was discharged for being medically unfit, he had lead poisoning said to be as a result of his family background being painters in England , he had Rheumatism and was already showing signs of hardening of the arteries at 31.His description on military records says he was five foot 6 inches tall weighed 154 lbs brown hair and grey eyes.. He had been stationed out of Winnipeg and Violet and the kids must have followed him as her address on the Military papers is given as Winnipeg, Manitoba.

They remained in Winnipeg after his discharge and his occupation is given as fireman. Here Myrtle Irene was born Sept 27 1918 and Evelyn Janet ,was born June 19 1927 . On Sept 10 , 1927 the family left for Vancouver B.C.
