General Notes: Simon Holstead is no doubt a descendant of Henry Halstead who settled in Virginia in 1651. This is inferred when Simon was appointed as guardian of John T. Holstead, the son of James Holstead and Elizabeth Portlock Holstead as well as guardian of Elizabeth's brothers Thomas, William and Dempsey (Chancery file 3052) But the determination of Simon Holstead's actual parentage has yet to be established and documented. Simon and Dianah were married by Joshua Livesay.

Simon married Dinnah Sevills, daughter of Daniel Sivils and Diana (Sevils), on 28 Aug 1828 in Norfolk County, Virginia.2 Dinnah was born in 1803 and died in Aug 1857 in Saint Brides, Norfolk County, Virginia.3

He was the son of Benjamin F. and Mrs. Elizabeth Knight Halstead. A native of Princess Anne County, he had lived in Portsmouth most of his life, lately at 2919 Arlington St. He was a retired shipfitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and was a member of the Broad Street Methodist Church. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Gary Sharpe, Mrs. Paul Hoofnagle, Mrs. William Pittman, Mrs. J. J. Pendleton, and Mrs. Leroy Reinholz and three sons, Benjamin F. Halstead Jr., Howard W. Halstead and Vernon E. Halstead, all of Portsmouth; 23 grand children and five great-grand­children. The body was taken to the Snellings Funeral Home, where funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Morrisette of Norfolk; five sisters, Dorothy Sharp of Hampton, Hyacinth Hoofnagle, Beatrice Pittman, Aline Penelton and Virginia Shinn all of Portsmouth; two brothers, Howard Halstead and Vernon Halstead, both of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at graveside in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Alan G. Reifsnyder. Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Survivors include five daughters, Jacqueline S. Roberts of Faber, Va., Betty S. Sievert and Shirley S. Steele, both of Yorktown, Va., Frances S. Barber of Virginia Beach, and Mary S. Bartels of Youngsville, N.C.; one son, Thomas G. Sharpe Jr. of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Hyacinth Hoofnagle, Ailine Pendleton, and Virginia Shinn, all of Portsmouth; one brother, Vernon Halstead of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, May 24, 1995, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Charles A. Joy in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. and also at 3300 Upper Palace Green (Middle Plantation) Virginia Beach following the service. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dorothy married Thomas Gary Sharpe on 3 Apr 1931 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Thomas was born on 11 Dec 1908 in Spartanburg, South Carolina and died on 27 Jan 1965 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mrs. Hoofnagle, a native of Portsmouth, was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. Halstead and Mary Elida Terwilliger Halstead. She was a retired nurse and a 1932 class graduate of King's Daughters Hospital School of Nursing (now Portsmouth General Hospital). She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the widow of Paul Wayne Hoofnagle.

A native of Buell, VA, he was born on June 12th, 1923, the son of the late John S. and Annie Seebo Halstead. He grew up in Portlock, VA and attended Portlock High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal for his service. Melvin married Iva Gaynell Johnston on September 6th, 1947 in their hometown church, Rosemont Christian Church. He attended Georgia Tech on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He returned to active duty in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After completing his military service, Melvin moved to Michigan and worked for 32 years at General Motors. After retiring as Director of Paint Standards for GM, Iva and Mel moved to Roswell, GA. As retirees, they spent time with family and friends and traveling with International Executive Service Corp. He was a member of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church in Sandy Springs, GA a former member of Auburn Hills Presbyterian Church of Auburn Hills, MI and Rosemont Christian Church, Chesapeake, VA. He is survived by his wife, Iva Johnston Halstead; three daughters, Adelvia Halstead-Nussloch and her husband, Richard of Roswell, GA, Sharon Halstead DePorre and her husband, Jules of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and D. Yarrow Halstead of Ypsilanti, MI; two sons, Melvin Christian Halstead, Jr. of Seattle, WA, and Timothy Marshall Halstead and his wife, Jill of Loganville, GA.
