General Notes: On 20 Dec 1878, Elizabeth Brown, widow of William Brown, applied, stating he had served between 50 and 60 days. She was granted the pension on 24 Jun 1879 - $8 per month. Elizabeth stated that she was 72 years old, resident of Grayson County. She gave a description of her husband at the time of his enlistment as 5 feet, 9 or 10 inches high, light hair, eyes blue, light complexion. She was married to said William Brown in the county of St. Francois, in state of Missouri on 23 May 1824 by James Holbert a minister of the Baptist Church.

5. Lemuel Holsted Jr. (Lemuel1) was born on 31 Mar 1818 in St. Francois County, Missouri, died on 20 Feb 1865 in Holsted Creek, Canaan, Searcy County, Arkansas, and was buried in Canaan Cemetery, Searcy County, Arkansas. The cause of his death was Shot.
General Notes: 2nd LT. in Company D, 45th Arkansas Militia. He was a Confederate Scout and served from 1863-1865. His wife, Miranda filed for Confederate widows pension. Lemuel moved to Searcy Country about 1839 and was listed as single in the 1840 census. He was shot and killed in the spring of 1865, some say by Jay-hawkers, after some gold he had.
Lemuel was a Blacksmith and was working in his shop at home on Bear Creek when the Federal troops showed up. He took off on foot across the fields and woods, but the troops circled around and he was unable to escape. Both Maranda's pension application and military records verify he was killed by Federal troops. The women took boards off of an old wagon box to make a casket for him because all the men were off at war.
Lemuel married Maranda Adams, daughter of Robert Adams and Sinthia Smith Cates, in 1840 in Searcy County, Arkansas. Maranda was born on 30 Jan 1823 in Searcy County, Arkansas, died on 8 Aug 1909 in Searcy County, Arkansas, and was buried in Canaan Cemetery, Searcy County, Arkansas.

Third Generation
15. John Burnham Holsted (Benjamin3, Lemuel1) was born on 19 Dec 1849 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana and died on 13 Dec 1933 in Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.
General Notes: He was the youngest of three children born to Benjamin and Jane Frazier Holstead who were married on October 31, 1844. He was eleven years of age when the Civil War started in April, 1861. Because of the war and family circumstances, he received little formal education. He left home in 1871 and settled in Farmerville, Louisiana, where he worked for a news paper called the Junior Record. In 1873 he became the editor of that paper. In 1874, he moved to the relatively prosperous town of Vienna in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana where he became the editor of the Vienna Sentinel. While working for the Sentinel, he studied law by reading in the library of a practicing attorney in Vienna, and he was admitted to the practice of law in 1878 when he was 29 years of age. He married Lula Tanner on February 26, 1878. Two children were born to them in Vienna, Kate Holstead (born December 21, 1878) and Bernice Holstead (born September 29, 1882). The family left Vienna and moved to Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, in 1884. In Ruston, two other children were born to them, Clyde B. Holstead (born March 24, 1886) and George B. Holstead (born January 12, 1895) John Burnham Holstead had a successful law practice in Ruston. In 1912, he was elected judge of the Fourth Judicial District and served until 1916. From that time on he was known in Ruston and within the family as Judge Holstead. He was one of the founders of what is now Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. He died in his home in Ruston on December 13, 1933. His descendants are now scattered across the country.

Late the Sun Oil transferred my father from Valdosta, Georgia, to Midland, Texas, then to Abilene, Texas, and then to Jackson, Mississippi. He left Sun Oil Company in 1952, and moved his family back to his home town, Ruston, Louisiana, where he lived the balance of his life.
RUSTON, LA. - John Burnham Holstead II of Ruston died Tuesday, February 16, 1988 at Lincoln General Hospital. He was 74 years old and a native of Lincoln Parish. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 1988 in Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Christ H. Andrews officiating. Services are under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 5 p.m. on Wednesday and after 10 a.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston. J. B. Holstead was the grandson of the late Judge John B. Holstead and the son of the late Clyde B. and Gertrude Randall Holstead of Ruston. He was married first to Maurice Cook Holstead who died in 1978. He was a retired independent petroleum landman and was an employee of Sun Oil
Company for many years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the American Association of Petroleum Landmen. He is survived by his wife, Mary Belle Taylor Kirkland Holstead; a son, John B. Holstead III of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Carol H. VanHook of Fort Worth, Texas; Mrs. Holstead's daughter, Mary Belle Tuten of Ruston; Mrs. Holstead's son Neil S. Kirkland of Ruston; and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Rand Holstead, Scott Holstead, Will Holstead, John VanHook, and Robert Neil Kirkland, grandsons, and Harry Cook, Jr. John T. Richardson, Jr., and Charles L. Tannehill.

Services for prominent Ruston attorney, George B. Holstead, Jr., will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2002 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston, Louisiana with Rev. Fred Wideman officiating, and Rev. Doug McGuire assisting. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Holstead died of respiratory complications at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston on December 27, 2002. He was 78. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mr. Holstead was a graduate of Louisiana Tech and obtained his law degree from Louisiana State University. He was the state representative from Lincoln Parish for a total of sixteen years in the Louisiana legislature, serving in numerous capacities, including Chairman of the Judiciary committee. An ardent supporter of higher education, Mr. Holstead was instrumental in the record growth of facilities at Louisiana Tech and Grambling University during the period of 1964-1979. Mr. Holstead was a decorated World War II soldier, having served in the Air Force as a part of the 63rd Bomb Squadron, Fifth Air Force, fighting in the western Pacific. His love for aircraft carried over into his private life. He enjoyed his hobby of flying until his health forced him out of the cockpit a few years ago. Mr. Holstead was an outstanding track athlete at Louisiana Tech following his military tour, having won the conference championship in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. He was an invited participant in the Olympic Trials held in New Orleans for the 1948 Olympics. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Holstead of Ruston; daughters Nancy Vascocu and husband Jerome of Rayville, Helene Shaw of Ruston, Kate Graham and husband Danny of Ruston; son George B. Holstead, III and wife Sandy of Seattle, Washington; grandsons Jerry Vascocu, Jim haw, Ben Shaw, Tim Shaw, George Holstead, IV, Nicholas Holstead, Tyler Springer, and Jordan Springer; granddaughters, Julie V. Stewart, Sarah G. Pullin, Anna Vascocu, Ginny G. Ramsey, Emmaline Graham; and three great grandchildren, Jake and Virginia Vascocu and Georgia Ellen Stewart. Pallbearers will be W. A. Jones, Wayne Smith, Jerry Vascocu, Jim Shaw, Ben Shaw, Tim Shaw, Colin Stewart, and Brad Pullin. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Reed, Johnny Perritt, John Armstrong, Billy James, and Jimmy Mize.
