1. Henry Halstead, son of Nathan Halstead and Isabell (Halstead), was born about 1626 in Middleton, Lancashire, England ¹ and died about 1685 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia.²

From Bath near Sorby Bridge, Halifax Parish, near Lancashire, England, dated 29 of January, 1650. "Loveing and deare Sister my love remembered la you I am heartily glad to heare from you I never heard of your husband's death before these last letters I am altogether unsettled as yett nor I will not marry as yett I will slay one yeare to see how things goe I pray you Sister doe what you can to send mee my means as fast as you can and what you can conveniently for if I settle here the want of it will be a great loss for ( ) is dead now and without one hand ( ) they will suffer damage by being force to put off at any price, but I live with my uncle James and want nothing I am very much made of and my ant would have me to marry with some of that she is ant to but I put it off because my ant is old and but ill and if she dye I know not how things may fall out. but your ant marvelled at you that you can have such a good heart to marry againe soe sonne being in a strange contry. About the monye that is oweing it is 93 pounds but I know not whether anything will be gotten ( ) at his age but the next returne I send you (what?) will be gotten. (Addressed) To his deare Sister Edna northen liveing at Rowley in new ingland.

Henry had come to America as a child in 1635. His family arrived in Concord, Massachusetts as members of the Bay Colony Company. Henry Returned to England after his brothers death in 1645. Henry Halstead visited his uncle James at Sowerbyridge, Halifax Parish, near Lancashire while back in England after his father's death in the Colonies and before he returned to the Colonies. Henry came to Elizabeth City County, Virginia with six others with Captain Christopher Burroughs on November 7, 1651. Christopher Burroughs was given a grant of land dated 15 Aug 1651 by the Governor of Virginia for two hundred forty acres of land. This "Head-Right", used to stimulate immigration, was for bringing Henry Holstead and others to the colony. Henry was about 25 years old when he came to the colony putting him born about 1626. Henry was a freeman so he apparently had the money to pay for his passage. Since no head-right was claimed for a wife, it is presumed that he married a local girl named Bridget.

Henry received a grant of 58 acres in Lower Norfolk County on South side of Eastern Branch of Elizabeth river at the head of Indian Creek from the British Crown via Sir William Berkeley, the Governor General of Virginia on September 14, 1667. Henry bought an additional 200 acres on Indian Creek on August 5, 1661,

HOLSTEAD - MATHIAS from: "Historical Southern Families", Volume XIV, page 96-97

Henry Holstead, grandfather of Mary (Mathias) Portlock, died in Norfolk Co., Va., in 1685, his will dated March 12, 1684/5 and probated May 15, 1685 (Book 4, p.200), mentioning his sons Simon, Henry and John (the last two under age); daughter Ann Holstead; wife and son Simon executors. The wife of Henry Holstead was named Bridget, and she married (2) John Goosecott who died in 1691, leaving all his property to his wife (Bk.5, p.155). On Jan.17, 1711/12 Bridget Goosecott, widow, made a deed of gift to her son John Holstead, and "my seven grandchildren", Elizabeth, Simon, Henry and Drew Holstead, children of Henry Holstead, and John, Mary and Elizabeth Mathias, children of her daughter Ann and Matthew Mathias (Bk.9, p.111). The eldest son Simon Holstead seems to have died. The son John Holstead died unmarried in 1719. The will of "Capt. John Holstead", dated May 27, 1719 and probated July 17, 1719 (Bk.lO, p.77) leaves John Portlock his watermill; John Mathias his part of a sloop; William Portlock his plantation; and makes other bequests to Elizabeth Portlock and William Portlock. John Portlock #46 and his brother William Portlock #47 had obviously married by this time Mary and Elizabeth Mathias, daughters of Matthew Mathias and his wife Ann Holstead.

In 1720, John Mathias, John Portlock and Mary his wife, William Portlock and Elizabeth his wife, and Simon, Henry, Matthew, Ann, Mathias, infants, by Matthew Mathias, their next friend, sued Henry Holstead, administrator of John Holstead decd. (Orders and Wills, 1719-23, pp.21-22). This chancery suit went on until June 21, 1723, the Court having decided that no solution could be reached until after the death of Bridget Goosecott, who was obviously still living at this time: (ibid. p.61). Matthew Mathias, husband of Ann Holstead, died in 1732, having married a second wife, Sarah. His will, dated Oct.29, 1731 and probated Mar.17, 1731/2 (Bk. ll, p.49), mentions his sons Joshua and Matthew; daughter Sarah Mathias; three daughters, Mary Portlock, Elizabeth Portlock, and Ann Holstead; and wife Sarah whom he appoints executrix.

Last Will and Testament of Henry
Item 1: I give and bequeath to my son, Symon Holstead, my Manor plantation, to him and his heirs forever, it being that part or parcel of land I bought of Mr Whitehurst.
Item2: I give and bequeath to my son Henry Holstead, 100 acres of land lying next to my manor plantation, to him and his heirs forever, and I also give and bequeath to my son Henry Holstead, fower coes and 1 heifer, (that is) to say, old bradhorns and young bradhorn and whiteflanke and browning and browing's heayfer, with the increase of the female, to him and his heirs forever, the cattle to be delivered at the decease of his father, and 1 feather bed and boulster and rugg and 1 blankett, 2 pewter dishes, 2 pewter plattes, on iron pot, and 1 chest marked H . H., two him and his heirs forever and are to be delivered att the age of 20 years. Item 3: I give and bequeath to my son, John Holstead, 100 acres of land joyning to the land of his brother, Henry Holstead, to him, the said John Holstead, and his heirs forever, and I allso give to my son, John Holstead, 1 feather bed and boulster and rugg and blankett and 1 iron pott about three gallons, 2 pewter dishes, 2 pewter plattes, and 1 chest marked J. H. and are to be delivered to the said John Holstead when he comes to the age of 20 years. I also give to my son, John Holstead, fower cowes and on heayfer as followeth , Cherry Coale, Young Starr, and ould Starr, the Heayfer pretee, with the female increase, to him and his heirs forever, and are to run for the said John Holstead's use from the decrease of his father till he comes to the age of 20 years and then to be delivered to the said John Holstead with the male and female.
Item 4: I give and bequeath to my daughter, Ann Holstead, as followeth; 1 feather bed and boulster, and two blanketts, and 1 iron pot, 2 pewter dishes, and 1 basson, and 2 pewter plattes, 1 chest marked A. H.,and 4 heayfers and 1 cow, with their increase male and female, to her and her heirs forever, and are to run for her proper account from the decrease of her father, to her and her heirs forever.
Item 5: I give and bequeath and doe constitute my loaving wife and son, Symond, my hole and sole executors of all my hole estate boath within dores and without soe long as my wife remain a widdo and if my wife marre that then all that part of my estate that they are possessed with shee shall surrender up to my son, Symond Holstead, but if she continue a widdo dureing her natural life that then my wife shall have the same fregrase and regras as now she hath, and I also doe order and ordaine that my wife and son, Symond, that they upon their one (own) cost and charge doe well and truely give my two sons, Henry and John Holstead, 2 years skooling, and I doe further order and ordaine that when my 2 sons, Henry and John Holstead, come to age shall have each of them a negro and my daughter, Ann Holstead, to have 1 and allso if the mares doe increase, that my 2 young sons and my daughter Ann Holstead, shall have each of them a young mare or horse delivered to them when they come to age, and I do further request my son, Symond Holstead, upon my blessing, that you do truely preform this will.

She had long been a faithful and an active member of Providence Christian church and will be greatly missed, not only in the church, but most of all in the circle of her beloved family, where a devoted husband and loving children to mourn their loss. Col. Griffin Halstead, in 1875, wrote the following account of his life: My father & mother were John Halstead of Currituck, NC, & Ruth Richardson, his wife. Early in their married life they removed from the shore of Albemarle Sound to the northern central part of the State, where, near Guilford Court-house, I was born, Jun 11, 1802. I was the oldest son of the family who survived infancy. When I was two years old, my parents left their native State for the blue grass regions of KY; but the uncertainty of land-titles in the State caused them to continue their journey to the valley of the Great Miami, near the town of New Haven. In the Spring of 1805 a great flood dislodged them. The water of the Miami was higher than it has ever since been known, & my parents escaped from their cabin on horseback. This incident caused another movement, & a settlement upon the farm where I have ever since (almost seventy years) resided. The recommendation of the farm was that the tract contained both a hill & bottom land, & was well timbered, watered by several fine springs, & out of the way of the floods.
In the opening of this farm the best energies of my early years were expended. My work varied by occasional hunting & fishing excursions, & trips to mill & to market, camp-meetings, huskings, & militia musters, the amusements that the country afforded; & during some brief intervals of very inclement weather, attendance at the Buckeye school-house on Paddy's Run. In 1822, I was captain of the militia; & in the Winter of 1824-25 I visited New Orleans. In 1826 I was elected colonel of the militia of the county, mustering at Millville; & I have, at various times, held the offices of clerk & trustee of my township, & have repeatedly served as magistrate.
Nov 1, 1827, I was united in marriage with Miss Clarissa Willits, eldest dau/o James Willits, who resided near New Haven. We had four children, two sons & two daughters: Caroline who died in infancy; Murat & Benton, who are residents of Cincinnati, (Hamilton Co., OH); & Helen, Mrs. John M. Scott, who occupies the old homestead farm adjoining my own.
When the Mexican War occurred, I enlisted in the Butler Guards, but inflammatory rheumatism, contracted in Camp Washington, prevented any participation in active service. I have been for over 50 years a pretty regular attendant at the polls in Ross Twp., & have been in the habit of voting the Democratic ticket.
My earliest distinct recollections of public affairs are of the excitement attending the events of the last war with England; & Butler Co., now so highly cultivated, was, within my remembrance, but a wilderness, broken with clearings that occupied comparatively but a small space; & the game we hunted in those days, including panthers, bears, & deer, was sometimes equal to hunting us. I am not aware that any other citizen of the county has lived for 70 consecutive years on one farm, so perhaps I may claim seniority in that particular.
I have outlived nearly all who were with me in early times. My wife, my sisters, my brothers, &, with here & there an exception, the old neighbors, all are gone; & I approach the age of 73, in the enjoyment of reasonable health & strength beyond that ordinarily associated with my years.

General Notes: REUBEN HALSTEAD, farmer and stock raiser, Terre Haute, was born in Butler county, Ohio, April 12, 1810. He lived on a farm in Ohio until about 1829, when he came to Tippecanoe county, Indiana, near Lafayette, and commenced dealing in stock, which business he followed until within the last few years with remarkable success. In 1832 he came to Riley township, where he bought land and continued to deal in stock. In a few years he moved back to his farm in Tippecanoe county, where he staid (sic) for four or five years, and since then has made his home in Vigo county, coming to his present place from Riley township in 1871. He was married about 1834 to Louisa BROWN, in Riley township. She was a native of Ohio. They have four children living. The eldest, W.R., is president of the New Albany, Indiana, female college, under the direction of the Methodist Episcopal conference. The names of the other children are Reuben, Belle and Josephine. Mr. HALSTEAD was given $500 by his father to start on in life, but by far the larger part of his capital was his untiring energy and strong determination to succeed. He now owns about 1,000 acres of good farming lands in Riley and Honey Creek townships. His home is in the last named township in Sec. 10. All of his family except himself are Methodists. He has been a democrat, but now belongs to the nationals.
