Notes and Supporting Information:

Prestwich lies on the east bank of the river Irwel to the north of the Manor of Tetlow which was on the opposite bank of the Irwell to Pendlebury.
The first recorded member of the family is Robert of Prestwich mentionedin a list of adherents of Count John in his rebellion against his brother King Richard I. He was fined 4 marks to regain possession of his inheritance which had been detained by the king as security. Robert died before Michaelmas 1206 and was succeeded by his son Adam I who paid a further 5 marks to secure his fathers lands.
********************
The only mention of Prestwich in the Domesday book of 1080-1086 was for a Robert de Prestwich. Robert was fined 4 marks for supporting a rebellion against Richard I (The Lion heart).
The fact that Prestwich existed in 1080 meant that there must have been some Priestly presence in the area for some time preceding 1080. The Priest would have a chantry in which he would pray for the noble men of the township - for a small fee.
In 1206 Robert's son, Adam is listed as having 4 ox gangs (an area ofland that would require a pair of Ox to plough) in Alkrington and wastenant in chief of the king for 10 ox gangs in Prestwich and Failsworth. The Prestwich family (residing at Agecroft Hall ) carried on in possession of the manor of Prestwich for a further 5 generations until Johanna de Prestwich married Roger de Langley see middle ages.(Langley Hall being just a few miles to the North East of Prestwich)
