MICHAEL REESE HOSPITAL
Located in Chicago under care of the association known as the United Hebrew Charities.
Previous to 1871 this association maintained a small hospital for the care of some of its beneficiaries, but it was destroyed in the conflagration of that year, and no immediate effort to rebuild was made.
In 1880, however, Michael Reese, a Jewish gentleman who had accumulated a large fortune in California bequeathed $97,000 to the organization. With this sum, considerably increased by additions from other sources, an imposing building was erected, well arranged and thoroughly equipped for hospital purposes.
The institution thus founded was named after its principal benefactor. Patients are received without discrimination as to race or religion, and more than half those admitted are charity patients.
The present medical staff consists of thirteen surgeons and physicians, several of whom are eminent specialists.
