Dedication

This manuscript is dedicated to the memory of Edna Hazel McCullough Lowery, who got me started on the Hale family around 1970. I had been working on my mother's side of the family and she gave me the spark to start on this. She worked for many many years on this family as well as related ones and even some that are not that closely related. If there was anyone who knew a lot about the Hale family, it was Hazel. Her work and publications over the years helped me and many other people working on family genealogies or pedigrees and she was always available to discuss any facet of them. Her personal memories were invaluable in my work and I was constantly amazed at her ability to discuss even the most obscure name or relative in any of these lines without first having to refer to her own records.

I also wish to thank all of those others whose works I have incorporated either in whole or in part into this publication: John W. Hale for the information on Arthur Hale's descendants; Font Ray Armstrong for Jesse Hale's descendants; Shirley Peterson Dunn for the information on Harvey Hale's descendants and Jeanne Peterson for Alexander Hale's descendants. Each has provided insight and information that was invaluable. I may have added to their material, based on some of my research, but the basic information, including the names of descendants, is the result of their hard work.

As a history of families, this is a work that will never be completed. I am constantly adding information as I discover it as are those others listed above. That is what makes genealogy so interesting. There's always something new to discover about ancestors - as well as about those of our families who are currently living.

One thing I hope to do by placing this manuscript on my web site is to correct the many other researchers' mistranscriptions of my earlier editions. I have seen much of my research used in others' works with nothing to indicate the source or veracity of the information. Unfortunately, sometimes the information is changed without explanation. In other cases, my suppositions are incorporated into other works as though they are factual and not speculation. For example, I have seen many references to Turner Ogburn Hale and no one notes that the middle name was not used or shown anywhere until I used it in my 1993 edition. I have presumed that his middle name was Ogburn, but I have never seen it written anywhere, nor have I been able to confirm it. It could have been Oliver or any number of other names. Since I wrote that his middle name was Ogburn, it has been accepted as gospel.

If any researchers have any corrections or additions, they are most welcome to contact me online at garsanath@aol.com or by "snail mail" at 8318 S. Independence Circle, Unit 201, Littleton, Colorado 80128. I am always looking for new information.

The first part is about Thomas and Patience.
