The Ritchie Family of Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland

My Ritchie ancestors have been traced back to the early 19th century to the village of Dalry, Ayrshire in Scotland. My direct line of descent is shown in bold typeface.

First Generation

1. David RITCHIE.

David is my earliest known Ritchie ancestor. Unfortunately the parish registers for this time period have not yet been examined. A marriage for David has not been found on the International Genealogical Index and his wife's name has not been recorded on any of the baptisms found for his children.

Second Generation

2. David RITCHIE. Son of David RITCHIE. Christen 17 Jan 1801 in Dalry, Ayrshire, SCOTLAND 7.

3. Blair RITCHIE. Son of David RITCHIE. Christen 24 Apr 1803 in Dalry, Ayrshire, SCOTLAND 7.

He married Ann WHARRIE, 23 Dec 1834 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland 63.

They had the following children:

i. Magdalene RITCHIE

ii. John RITCHIE

4. Janet RITCHIE. Daughter of David RITCHIE. Christen 23 Mar 1806 in Dalry, Ayrshire, SCOTLAND 7. Died After 1881 38. Occupation Shirtmaker 18.

Janet is the eldest of David Ritchie's two known daughters.

She married William CAMPBELL, 16 Jun 1825 in Dalry, Ayrshire, SCOTLAND 5. Died Before 1861. Occupation Servant (1828), Gardener (1838) 5.

They had the following children:

14 ix. William CAMPBELL

Although the Census records for 1841 and 1851 have not been consulted as yet, Janet appeared on the 1861 Census residing in North St., Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland as Janet Campbell, she was described as a widow, aged 55 years, a shirtmaker, born Dalry. Her three youngest children were residing with her at the time, namely, Thomas, aged 22 years, an Engineer Smith, William aged 18 years, a Tinsmith and Magdalen aged 20 years, a dressmaker. Two boarders, Jean SIMPSON, aged 12 yrs, of Wigtown and Joh TURRAL, a 64 year old Cottonweaver were also living in the family home. 18

Janet has also been identified on the 1881 Census Index and was residing with her daughter, Sarah and her family at Old Martnaham, Coylton, aged 75, and described as a Gardener's widow, born in Dalry. 38

To date, a search of the Scottish Death Indexes has failed to identify her death after 1881.
