THE OLD FAMILY BIBLE

INTRODUCTION

The Bible, "Charles XII's Biblia", printed by Henrik Kayser in 1703, on November 22, 1772 was bequeathed by Anders Rothstein, City Councilor in Stockholm, to his daughter Catharina Magdalena, married to the supercargo and landowner Henric Wilhelm Hahr.

According to a clause in the will of Henric Wilhelm Hahr and his wife, dated May 12, 1791, the Bible should belong after their death to their oldest son, Anders Hahr with the provision that after his death it should go to the oldest of his children and male descendants "with the explicit provision that never during division of an estate, will it be subject to lot or exchange or be inherited by descendants outside of our family.

Anders Hahr confirmed the above, and gave the Bible to his oldest son, Anders Christoffer, on July 13, 1824.

Since that day and until February 27, 1953, no further annotations have been made in the Bible.

After the time when Anders Christoffer had possession of the Bible, it was not owned by the family for about 100 years. Anders Christoffer probably took it with him when, during the 1840’s, he moved from Nosaby in Scania to the Isle of Gotland. During those years in the 1860’s which were economically troublesome for him and his sons on Gotland, or perhaps in connection with the hurried emigration of his oldest son Anders Göran Fredrik Hahr from Stockholm via Gotland to the United States in the summer of 1854, the Bible presumably was sacrificed for hard cash. Surely this did not happen unless there was an extreme emergency.

Strangely enough, Anders Christoffer’s niece Zuleima Hahr, who stayed with him and his son August Theodor together with her mother at the Ar lime works during the summer of 1862, in her letters to her fiancée Lieutenant Henning Thulstrup does not mention a word about the family Bible. The life at Ar, and the relatives there, are however described in detail. This fact would indicate to a certain degree that the Bible already at this time had been sold.

A Rothstein during the 1890s offered to sell the Bible to Anders Hahr’s grandson, Mauritz Hahr. The latter, however, due to the high asking price, had to forego the purchase. This Rothstein was probably Karl Otto Rothstein, station master at Hemse, b, 1862 in Visby, d. 1901 at Hemse. He was the son of Karl Gustaf Rothstein, cashier of the Gotland Enskilda Bank, b. 1830, d. 1870 in Visby. Whether or not the Bible came into the ownership of these Rothsteins through direct purchase or through an intermediary is unknown.

The City Councilor Anders Rothstein’s great grandson, manager of the Liljeholmen candle factory, is said to have purchased the Bible around 1900 at an auction whether this was a book auction, or a merchandise auction is unknown. His daughter, Bertha, married to E. O. A. Angelin, Secretary of the Army Department, inherited it from her father, and after her it went to her daughter Karin, married some time after 1910 to Count E. Spens, Captain of the Royal Swedish Navy. Upon being widowed, Countess Spens had the kindness to offer the Bible to the son of the above-mentioned Mauritz Hahr, Colonel Gösta Hahr.

After the necessary means had been contributed be the family, above all by the great granddaughter of Anders Hahr, Mrs. Annie Hahr Dobbs of Atlanta, Ga., the Bible was returned to the ownership of the Hahr family on February 27, 1953 exactly 250 years after its printing. May it so remain!

If the provisions of the will had been carried out, the present owner of the Bible would have been the great grandson of Anders Göran Fredrik Hahr, William Edward Hahr1, born 1927 in Brooklyn, N.Y., now residing in Nyack, NY.

"Habent sua fata libelli!". Books have their fate. Not even the Book of Books escapes it.
