Cassville Republican, Weekly Paper, Thursday, March 24, 1898 Purdy News Items: W. S. Foster of the Purdy Hardware Co., has sold his farm, known as the Jack Long farm, 3 miles south of Purdy, to H. B. Stith of Jasper County. New Site News: Sunday was a very rainy day, yet between 130 and 150 friends and relatives of J. H. Banks gathered at his home to celebrate his birthday. Two long tables were laden with the choicest viands of the culmary? art. After all had declared themselves satisfied, many basket full were taken up. The afternoon was spent in social conversation interspersed with decollations, instrumental and vocal music. There were too many persons and too many anecdotes to relate, but I might recall the "adjusting to the table" which was harder to accomplish than the apparent adjusting of food to appetites. Geo. Russell as usual was as wild as a Kickapoo. Cassville, Purdy, Pierce City, and Monett were represented. To sum it all up it was a decided success, and enjoyed by everyone. The absence of New Site last week was caused by the writer being in attendance at the marriage and infer? dinner of A. J. Reynods and Miss Maggie Ross, both of Berwick. The wedding took place in the Berwick Baptist Church at 12 o'clock, March 13, Rev. S. M. Skaggs officiating. The attends were Miss Mattie Ross, sister of the bride and C. W. Fleetwood. After the ceremony, a reception and wedding dinner were given at the home of the bride's parents, 85 partaking. The next day a dinner was given at the home of the groom's parents, 78 enjoying this feast. It was a pleasant affair. The bride is one of the twin daughters of Judge P. W. Ross, and is well known and beloved by all who know her. The groom is an energetic young farmer, with a host of friends. They went to housekeeping on the Jack Pipkin farm with the best wishes of numerous friends, a goodly number of whom expressed their respect by useful and beautiful presents. Schmidt. Golden News: Alfred Tucker is now carrying the mail to Eureka. May, daughter of M. H. and Pauline Roberts, was born Feb 24, 1890 and died Mar 9 1898 at 6 o'clock p. m. She was 8 years and 13 days old, the baby of the family. Not only was she idolized by her parents, but by all who knew her. She was at church and Sunday School whenever she could be there and was a sweet little singer. None knew her but to love her. She leaves to mourn her departure, besides a hosts of friends and relatives, three sisters, and one brother, Florence, Dora, Emma, and Frank, and a kind father and affectionate mother. She was patient to the last and gently fell "asleep in the arms of Jesus". The funeral services were conducted by W. C. Wiley at the family residence at 2? o'clock Mar 19, after which a host of friends followed the remains to the cemetery for interment. [a poem follows] |
