"From out Thomas Tanner and his marriage to Betsy Bain, about
1820, to the present time, the history is plain, and the dates
are substantial. Family tradition has it that as he was a
yankee, her father, a wealthy Kentucky Colonel, disinherited
her because of the marriage. She took her first baby to see
him, hoping he would relent. When she returned to her home, he
gave her a feather bed.
Thomas W. Tanner was a soldier in the Black Hawk War, helping
drive the Indians out of the State of Illinois in 1832. Years
later he wanted to move farther north, into Illinois. His
wife, however, did not wish to move any more because of the
newly settled homestead, and she did not go. He did not return
and his family did not hear from him again. It is not known
what ill befell him."
