"By the sword and cross," Charlemagne (Charles the Great) becamemaster of Western Europe. It was falling into decay when Charlemagnebecame joint king of the Franks in 768. Except in the monasteries, peope had all but forgotten education and the arts. Boldly Charlemagneconquered barbarians and kings alike. By restoring the roots oflearning and order, he preserved many political rights and revivedculture.
Charlemagne's grandfather was Charles Martel, the warrior who crushedthe Saracens. Charlemagne was the elder son of Bertrade ("BerthaGreatfoot") and Pepin the Short. first
"mayor of the palace" to become king of the Franks.
In 768, when Charlemagne was 26, he and his brother Carloman inheritedthe kingdom of the Franks. In 771 Carloman died and Charlemagne becamesole ruler of the kingdom. By 800 Charlemagne was the undisputed rulerof Western Europe. His vast realm covered what is now France,Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. It included half ofpresent-day Italy and Germany, part of Austria and the Spanish March("border")
Charlemagne was tall, powerful and tireless. His secretary, Eginhard, wrote that Charlemagne had fair hair and a "face laughing and merry...his appearance was always stately and dignified. He delighted inhunting, riding and swimming. He wore the Frankish dress - - linenshirt and breeches, a silk-fringed tunic, hose wrapped with bands and, in winter, a tight coat of otter or marten skins.
On Christmas Day in 800 Pope Leo III crowned Charlemage as the firstHoly Roman emperor.
At Charlemagne's death in 814 only one of his three sons, Louis, wasliving. Louis' weak rule
brought on the rise of civil wars and revolts. After his death histhree quarreling sons split the empire between them by the Partitionof Verdun in 843.

Note: PEPIN THE SHORT, 714-768, first Carolingian king of the Franks(751-68), son of Charles Martel and father of Charlemagne. Succeedinghis father as mayor of the palace in 741, he ruled Neustria, Burgundy, and Provence, while his brother, Carloman (d.754) received Austrasiaand what came to be known as Thuringia. In 743 the brothers choseChilderic III, a Merovingian, as nominal king of all the Franks. Withtheir help St.Boniface effected far-reaching reforms that strengthenedthe Frankish church and advanced the conversion of the Saxons. AfterCarloman had retired in 747 to a religious life, Pepin, with theconsent of the pope, St. Zacharias, forced Chilferic into a monasteryand had himself proclaimed king (751). In return for recognition bythe pope, Pepin defended Rome against the Lombards (754-756) from whomhe wrested the exarchate of Ravenna and other cities. These he decedto the pope, thus laying the foundation of the Papal States. Pepinalso extended his territories and subdued Aquitaine.
Note: CHARLES MARTEL, Frankish ruler, illegitimate son of Pepin of Heristaland grandfather of Charlemagne. After the death of his father in 714hesiezed power in Auystrasia from Pepin's widow, who was ruling regentfor her grandsons, and became mayor of the palace. He subsequentlysubdued the W Frankish kingdom of Neustria and began the reconquest ofBurgundy, Aquitaine, and Provence. Although he never assumed thetitle of king. he divided the Frankish lands, like a king, between hissons, Pepin the Short and Carloman.
