Note: The following article, "The Hawkins Family Among America'sEarliest Settlers" was written by Lizzie Hawkins Dean " and isreprinted from a 1914 issue of "The Jeffersonian" newspaper ofLouisville, Kentucky.
"Fairmount, Sept. 6 -- Among the earlier settlers in the EnglishColony in America was William Hawkins, one of the younger sons of SirJohn Hawkins, a Rear Admiral in the British Navy under QueenElizabeth, the Virgin Queen after whom the colonists named theirsettlement in honor of her virginity and Virginia is has been calledever since.
"William Hawkins migrated from England and took possession of hisfather's land (see father's bio). He lived to be 114 years old andreared 12 sons, who eventually scattered out all over the Britishterritory hee. One of these sons founded Hawkinsville, Tennessee.Still another settled in Mississippi, and another, Reuben Hawkins,brought his entire connections to what is now the State of Kentucky.
