Dear Gillian,
I have recently visited Mary Trevis in Lincoln [after many failed attempts to fix up a meeting - it has taken me two years, what with one thing and another). While I was there she showed me a number of family photographs, and I managed to get copies of most of them This one in particular is extremely interesting, and I thought you would like to have a copy.
The occasion of the photograph was apparently the death of the youngest child, Ethel, who was struck by lightning at the age of four and a half. According to Mary John Bartlett Chattell realised he had no photograph of Ethel, and after the funeral assembled all his remaining children - hence this picture.
The names, mostly according to Mary [who must have had them from her mother years ago) and confirmed by their known ages at that date [6 June 1897] are as follows:
Back row: Arthur John and his wife Lily [nee~ Towlson], Martha Annie, Ellen, Louisa and Charles.

Middle row: Lizzie )[known in the family as Betty] Mackenzie with her eldest child, Kitty, on her lap, John Bartlett, Elizabeth [nee~ Bell], and Mary Ann [known as Polly] with Archie Walker on her lap.
Front row: George and Samuel.
I hope you enjoy seeing this photograph as much as I did; up to then I had not seen any of our great-grandparents, and none of any of their children when young.
