Will of
Thomas Guppy of Becon Hill. Chardstock. 1643.
In the name of god amen the eight daie of August in the yeare of our
Lord God 1643. I Thomas Guppy of the parish of Chardstock in the Countie of Dorset
yeoman being of good and perfect memory thanks be given unto Almightie God doe
make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme following.
Ffirst and before all things I
give and bequeath my soule into the hands of Almighty God my maker and redeemer
and my bodie to be buried in the church or churchyard of the said parish of
Chardstocke.
Item; I give the maintenance of the said Church the
sume of two shillings.
Item; I give to the poore of the sayd parish of
Chardstocke the some of five shillings.
Item; I give to my two daughters, Grace the wife of Edward Dennen and Elizabeth the wife of Alexander Cooke
to each of them the some of tenn pounds a piece to be paid to them within six
monthes after my decease.
Item; I give to every one of my grandchildren ffive shillings apeice, the said severall sumes to be paid within
six monthes after my decease to as many of them as
shall then of the age of one and twentie years and
the sayd tyme also to the
parents or guardians of as many of them as shall be at that time under the age
of one and twentie years for as the sayde parents guardians respectively doe give an acquittance for the same.
Item; I give unto every one of my godchildren which
are living at the time of my death and are not my grandchildren to each of them
twelve pence.
Item; I give unto my sister Agnes Martin the sume of twentie shillings to be paid unto her within six months
after my decease.
Item; I give unto John House the best cloak or coat which I shall have at the time of
my death.
Item; I give unto Joan Guppy ffortie shillings and the rest
of my goods and chattells I give unto my grandchild Thomas Guppie.
The sonne of my sonne Thomas Guppy deceased whome I doe make and appoint to be executor of this my last
will and Testament and further my will and desire is that the before named Joane Guppy doe take on her the burden of the execution of
this my will during the minority of my sayd executor
moreover I give unto Robert Cogan
the summe of twentie
shillings and my will and desire is that he be an assistant unto the aforenamed Joane Guppy and
that to that purpose letters of administration within my said will annexed be
granted to the aforesaid Joane Guppy and Robert Cogan. In witnace whereof I have heer unto
set my hande and seal the daie
