CHAPTER 3

GRANDPARENTS OF

WILLIAM HARRISON GUNNOE

AND MARY JANE CLAY

James Anderson Gunnoe’s parents were Andrew Jackson Gunnoe and Mary (Polly) Canterbury. Andrew Jackson Gunnoe was born in 1819 in Giles County Virginia, the third child of Daniel H. Gunnoe and his first wife, Sarah (Sallie) Stewart. He married his first cousin, Mary Pauline (Polly) Canterbury, in 1841 in Giles County Virginia.  Mary was the daughter of Rev. John Quincy Canterbury and Amy Stewart (Sallie’s sister).  She was born May 3, 1822.  Andrew served in the Civil War; first as a member of the Confederate Home Guard, and later in the 45th Battalion, Virginia Infantry.  On Aug 14 1864, while home on furlough, he was shot and killed by Union sympathizers from ambush at his home in Craney, which was in Logan County at that time.  That part of Logan County later became Wyoming County.

Andrew Jackson and Mary Pauline (Polly) had the following children:

§         Rev. John William was born in 1846 in Logan County, Virginia (now Wyoming County, West Virginia) and died after 1910.  He was married to Sarah M Watts on September 10, 1863 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  He was divorced from Sarah before 1880. He was married to Julia Ann Laxton on August 23, 1886 in Wyoming County, West Virginia. Julia Ann was born on December 13, 1841.  In the marriage records for Wyoming County Julia Ann's last name is listed as Laxton age 44, which would suggest a birth year of about 1842.  In Carol Gunnoe's report she is listed as Julia Ann Stewart, born December 13, 1841.

§         Sarah Jane was born in 1847.  She was married to William P. Wesley on January 18, 1869 in Wyoming County, Virginia.  William was born about 1849.  Sarah married George Snuffer on August 27, 1894 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  George was born about 1831.

§         Daniel Henry was born on September 5, 1849 in Greenbrier County, Virginia and died about 1931.  He married Mary Etta Marshall on September 3, 1877 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  Mary Etta was born in 1855.

§         Matthew Ellison was born on January 13, 1852 in Wyoming County, Virginia.  He died sometime after 1910.  He married Pauline Acord on June 22, 1875 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  Pauline was born about 1856.

§         Nancy was born in February 1858 in Wyoming County, Virginia and died after 1910. She married Isaac Bailey on July1, 1885 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  Isaac was born about 1857.

§         Ellen (Marinda) was born in 1860 in Wyoming County, Virginia. She married Crockett David Morgan on September 25, 1894 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.

§         Zany (Fannie) was born in 1863 in Wyoming County.  She married William Corden Bailey on November 18, 1886 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.

Hannah Acord’s parents were James (Zur) Acord and Sarah Oliver. James was born about 1829/30 in Virginia to John (Old Jack) Acord and Nancy Harper.  He died before 1880. James married Sarah sometime before 1848. I previously thought that Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Oliver and Sarah Edwards but have since found that could not be the case.  She was born about 1827 in Lawrence County, Ohio.

James Mandeville Clay was the sixth of the eleven children of Charles Lewis Clay and Aura (Ora) Stewart.  Charles was born January 6, 1801 in Giles County, Virginia to Mitchell Clay, Jr. and Judah Clay.  Mitchell Jr. and Judah were first cousins.  Charles died December 6, 1884 in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Not only were Charles’s parents first cousins…but he also married his first cousin, Aura (Ora) Stewart on August 21, 1830 in Raleigh County, West Virginia.  It is in this generation that the Gunnoes and the Clays join.  Aura was the sister of Sarah (Sallie) Stewart Gunnoe (mother of Andrew Jackson Gunnoe) and Amy Stewart Canterbury (mother of Andrew’s wife, Mary (Polly) Canterbury).  Aura was born January 30, 1812 in Giles County, Virginia to Captain Ralph Stewart and Mary (Polly) Clay, Mitchell Jr.’s sister.  Aura died July 13, 1895 in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Lodosca’s parents were Alexander James Cantley and Mary (Polly) Scott.  Alexander was born February 23, 1794 and was the son of Samuel Cantley, Sr. and Rebecca Clark.  He married Mary (Polly) Scott, the daughter of John Scott and Amelia Amy Blankenship, on July 19, 1816 in Monroe County, Virginia.  Mary was born about 1797 in Virginia and died November 20, 1875 in Raleigh County, West Virginia.
