MILITARY: Elijah enlisted as a private in the Army of the Mississippi, 1st Army Corps, Second Division, Second Brigade, Commander Major General Benjamin F. Cheatam. He served in Smith's Battery later known as Capt. Turner's Battery, Mississippi Light Artillery. The company was organized in Clarke County, Mississippi on April 24, 1861 under James S. Terrall. Elijah served in the Light Artillery under first Melancthon Smith and later under Captain W. B. Turner who had first enlisted as a private and advanced through the ranks through hard work and perserverance. This unit fought in the battles of Shiloh; Corinth, Mississippi; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Chickamauga, Georgia; Atlanta, Georgia; and Mobile, Alabama. Elijah enlisted on 30 April 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi according to Chuck Shoemake who has seen the muster rolls. He was hospitalized in March 1864 and dischrged and then had to go back to the hospital in May and June, 1864.

Rasmus married (1) Elizabeth BOYCE 1 about 1853 in Clarke Co, MS. The marriage ended in divorce. Elizabeth was born about 1833 in MS. She died before 1900 in prob Washington Parish, LA.

PARENTS: There's a Robert P. Boyce (aged 60 DE) listed in the 1850 Clarke Co, MS census (the same county that Elijah Shoemake was listed in in the 1853 state census). His wife, Elizabeth is listed as age 45 and she was born in SC and their children are 1) Elizabeth aged 18 born in AL (2) Halhannah, age 12 born in AL.

They had the following children:

  12 M iii William B. SHOEMAKE "Billie" 1 was born in 1864/1865 in Jones Co, MS. He died after 3 Sep 1888.

He could have been named for Capt. William B. Turner of the MIssissippi Light Artillery of which his father belonged.

Rasmus also married 2 (2) Elizabeth Ann PITTS 1 on 2 Apr 1882 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches, TX. Elizabeth was born about 1829 in MS. She died 3 in Apr 1885 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches, TX.
