3. Samantha Gay NIXON [image] "Gay" 1, 2, 3, 4 (John B ) was born on 28 May 1872 in AL. She died on 8 Dec 1960 in Comanche, Stephens, OK and was buried in Old Fairlawn Cemetery Sec IV, Stephens, OK. Gay was employed as Farm Wife And Furniture Maker in OK.

She and Sam moved to Texas in 1908.
She made willow chairs out of the wiillows along the Red River. She made all the couches, chairs and furniture in the house. Her granddaughter, O. Frances Bradberry Gof, tells how she would work in the field alongside Sam on the farm.
"The family would gather in on Saturdays, Grandma and Grandpa would get the cream, butter and eggs loaded into the wagon to take into Wichita Falls to sell. When Mama (Ammie Jane) would get there, she would don the apron and cook for the whole clan."On Saturday evening, Grandpa and Grandma and Daddy (Ollie Bradberry) as well as the other aunts and uncles would gather around the porch and sing songs while Daddy played his fiddle or just swap stories. If we were quiet, we could sit and listen. All the kids would sleep on pallets on the floor and on Sunday afternoon, we would pile into the car or wagon and go home for the week.
We didn't attend Sunday services since Grandma and Grandpa lived so far from town or any church. " (Remembrances of Ollie Frances Bradberry Goff May 2002)

Sam was born on 2 Feb 1872 in Martling, Marshall, AL. He died on 22 Oct 1957 in Waurika, Jefferson, OK and was buried in Old Fairlawn Cemetery Sec IV, Stephens, OK. Sam was employed as Steamboat Pilot In Youth in Marshall Co, AL. He was employed as Farmer 1910 in Foard Co, TX. He was employed as Farmer in OK.

BIOGRAPHY: When I was a kid, my dad had spoke of Sam working on steam boats. I wish as an adult I had pinned him down on the nature of this, but most likely it was the Tennessee River as a longshore type worker. I imagine alot of goods were shipped up and down the river through northern Alabama. (Note by Linda Roholt)
Sam rode from Martling, Alabama on a white horse to either Electra or Foard City, TX. He then rode back to Alabama on the same horse and hired three boxcars to move his entire family to Texas in 1908.

BIRTH: Jo Strange was born on 22 Jan 1919 in Electra. At the time Ammie and your grandma were living with the Stranges while Ollie was oversees in the Army with Company G. Jo married and moved to Michigan and that's all that Mama knows.
Her mother, Gay, would work in the fields while Ammie took care of the house and the cooking. Ammie would nurse Frances and Jo at the same time...one at each breast. Later, after Ollie returned, when they would go to Sam and Gay's house, Ammie would carry her apron under her arm, greet everyone, and head for the kitchen.
Jo is the only one of Sam and Gay's children that Mama knows the DOB.

I found an SSDI record for a Houston Collins who was born 2 Feb 1898 and died Sep 1983 in Cookville, Titus, TX. Since several of the Strange families moved to Texas between 1900 and 1910, this could be him. There is also an Alabama Death Index record for a Houston Collins who died in Jul 1923 in Jefferson Co, AL.
