Provincial and proud of it
BY ANDI COOK
THE DAILY NEWS
CLIFTON — At the age of 94 Jesse Bankston still makes the two-hour drive from Baton Rouge to relax among the memories of home. He describes himself "definitely provincial." He said all of his ancestors on both sides lived within 20 miles of each other for the four generations prior to his.
Spanish trading post roots
Jesse was born and raised in the house in Clifton that dates back to when the Spanish owned Louisiana. The core of the present building is the result of the marrying of two separate one-room buildings that served as a commissary and a dormitory when it was a trading post. A third building served as a kitchen and dining area.
The Trading Post was in existence from 1808 to 1824 and was operated by William D. Smith. When the post was no longer profitable, he sold the property to William Self, who combined the two buildings with a dogtrot and added front and back porches.
In 1831 William Brumfield bought the property. He enclosed part of the back porch and made two bedrooms. He also walled in part of the front porch to make a Post Office when he became the Palestine Post Master.
Bankston roots
Jesse's grandparents, Young Peter and Louisa Bankston bought the home place from Brumfield in 1868. It has been in the family ever since. Young Peter enclosed the dogtrot and converted the north back bedroom into a kitchen. The separate building that had previously served as a kitchen was made into bedrooms for the boys of the family.
Young Peter was a progressive man. He purchased and installed the first wood-burning cook stove in the community. He also put glass windows in the house for the first time.
Jesse assumes his father learned his progressive ways from Young Peter. Jesse's parents, Leon Victor and Allie Ames Magee Bankston, bought the home place when Young Peter died in 1904. They raised 11 children, with Jesse being the seventh. Only Jesse and his brother Leo are still living. Jesse was born on October 7, 1907.
Leon put in a new kitchen and dining room with back porches. He added a second story so his boys would have bedrooms. Electricity was added to the home in 1933 and in 1934 the first electric stove and window air conditioner was installed. A new well was dug the same year to replace the 100 year old one, and for the first time the home had running water in the kitchen and an indoor bathroom. 1934 was also the year that butane gas was brought in, assuring heat in every room in the house.
Progressive Leon Bankston
Jesse remembers home as an emotionally warm place.
"I thought my father was the greatest man in the world," he said. "I really worshipped him."
Leon made sure his family was fed, clothed and educated. He himself was one of the first two graduates of the Franklinton Central Institute, a boarding school where boys could earn a B.A., the equivalent of a current day high school diploma.
During the Great Depression, the dairy Leon had started in 1916 kept the family afloat.
"If we hadn't had that during the depression, we would have lost our place like so many others did," Jesse admitted. "We grew our own food and sold a little milk to cover other expenses."
Leon's progressive ways were apparent to Jesse over the years. He had the only manure spreader in the area. While you had to fill the spreader, it saved one from having to hand spread the stuff in the field, which was quite an improvement, to Jesse's way of thinking.
Leon also had the first thresher in the community. His neighbors paid him to harvest their oats and velvet beans. He kept abreast of new innovations in farming and incorporated them whenever possible.
He bought an Oakdale automobile in 1917 and built a special shed to shelter it. Unlike the children, the car had its own room.
According to the 1920 census, seven families comprised of 42 people lived where the Bankston home place now stands. Fourteen were in Jesse's family. The others were relatives who lived there.
Education a priority
Leon told his girls he would pay their way through school, but told the boys they would have to finance their own education. This was no problem for the boys. Ten of the 11 children eventually earned a degree from college. In all, the 10 held 14 degrees. Jesse has a bachelor's and a master's. He has done everything toward his doctorate except write the dissertation.
At one time, five of the siblings were attending LSU at the same time. They lived together in a house and hired a cook and a maid, Jesse said. They were on their own for breakfast, but had hot meals waiting at dinner and supper. Jesse paid his portion of the upkeep with money earned from a paper route.
Jesse said he went to LSU intending to major in agriculture and follow in his revered Dad's footsteps. He found other subjects more interesting, though, and never returned home to farm. None of the 11 children ever expressed an interest in farming and so relatives ran the family farm until farming was discontinued.
Preserving a heritage
In 1953, Leon V. Bankston Enterprises, Inc. was formed to keep the family place up. It has 53 shareholders, all descendents of Leon and Allie. The corporation pays a caretaker to keep the property up. Any of the owners can use the place for a retreat whenever they want, but Jesse said he is the most frequent occupant.
Jesse regrets that he can't spend even more time out there, but even at 95, he stays busy. He takes classes at the Lagniappe Institute, a seniors educational program in Baton Rouge, in any subject that captures his imagination.
One of his projects was a family history. He compiled a book detailing the family roots. The book not only tells the story of the family, but it contains pictures of most of Leon's descendents that were alive when it went to press. The book also includes historical pictures of many of the deceased.
After compiling the concise, factual family history, he took a life writing course to help one learn how to record the stories of your life in an entertaining manner.
"My problem is that I have trouble embellishing a story," Jesse said. "I worked in hospital administration for years and I'm used to being concise and to the point."
Still, he feels he is learning. He wrote a piece about a relative who was born prematurely and was not expected to live. He went with his mother to see the baby that weighed only 2 ½ pounds at birth. They found the child wrapped up and resting in a large turkey baking-pan in the oven.
The baby was kept in the oven at a temperature of 75 degrees until he was big enough and healthy enough to survive on his own. Jesse said the baby lived and eventually was a strapping young man who played football. He has had the opportunity to introduce him several times at speaking engagements. He always tells the story, ending with "and he's been half-baked ever since."
Jesse's most recent writing accomplishment is a book entitled "Earl Long as I Knew Him." The book tells about his personal relationship with Long. Jesse was head of the state hospital system when Long was governor. He was partially responsible for getting the hospital in Bogalusa up and running.
While Jesse may have moved out of Washington Parish, his roots are deeply embedded here. He may have washed the manure from his farming days off of his hands, but he hasn't been able to shake his rural roots. He's still a country boy at heart.

Before that, he was a public official who served 2 years with the State Civil Service Department as an Administrative Assistant to the Director of the State Department of Institutions; candidate for Congress, Campaign Manager for a gubernatorial candidate; State Chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee for 10 years; member of the LA Board of Elementary and Secondary Education for over 24 years.
Even though it was an occupation exactly, he was a valued member of the William Magee Genealogical Committee and served as its Coordinator.
Jesse married Ruth Marie PAINE 1 on 21 Oct 1938 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, LA. Ruth was born on 27 Aug 1918 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, LA. She died 2 on 29 Nov 1997 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, LA.
