Marjorie P. Babington, 96, retired registered nurse for the Public Health Service, specializing in maternity and infant care, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Silver Cross Nursing Home in Brookhaven. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Brookhaven Funeral Home. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Brookhaven with burial in Ellis Cemetery in Franklinton, LA.
Mrs. Babington was born August 11, 1907 in Philadelphia to Alexander James Patterson and Annie Merritt Patterson, whom preceded her in death. She graduated from Mississippi Baptist School of Nursing.
Along with her parents, her husband, Stephen E. Babington precede her in death.
Survivors include: daughter, Marjorie B. (Penny) Whittington and husband Dr. F. Brown Whittington, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Frederick and Melissa Whittington of Pineville, La., Ellen and Samuel Moreton of Houston, Texas, Lisa and Thomas Carhart of Menlo Park, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Sara and Emily Whittington, Mallory and Charles Moreton, Will, Stephen and Elisabeth Carhart; and sister, Mildred Campion of Summit.

Knight was a lifelong resident of Washington Parish, active in church, business, political andfarming communities. Knight was the manager and then owner and operator of Murphy Bateman Building Supplies foralmost 50 years A retired dairy farmer, he was active during the earliest years of dairying inWashington Parish in the late 1940's; the dairy continued in the family until 1996. Knight was a member and a director of the early Gulf Milk Association, later serving as president of the Gulf Division Board of Dairymen, Inc , and as corporate board member ofDairymen, Inc. For almost four decades he served as the president of the Washington Parish Junior Livestock; hewas the first president of the organization, beginning in 1947. Knight served on the Washington Parish School Board, beginning in 1949, capping his years ofservice on the school board with his tenure as president from 1954 to 1966 Among his schoolboard related activities were president of the Louisiana School Board Association, as well asdirector, first and second vice president and the state legislative committee He was a memberand chairman of the United School Committee of Louisiana. Knight was a graduate of Franklinton High School, Class of 1932. His long time membership in the First Baptist Church of Franklinton included service in manycapacities as deacon, officer, committee membership and chairmanships He received deaconemeritus status in 1998. Knight was a member and past master of the Mason Lodge in Franklinton, a member of theFranklinton Chamber of Commerce and the Franklinton Country club. Knight is survived by his wife, Ella Bateman Knight; five children, Murphy Leon "Sonny"Knight of Poplarville, Wilbur Russell Knight, Richard N Knight and Clayton "Dinky" Knight allof Franklinton, and Patricia Knight Thrash of Mandeville; two sisters, Mildred O'Dell Strong ofSedona, AZ and Jeanne Knight Burris of Franklinton; twelve grandchildren and ninegreat-grandchildren. Knight was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur Warren Knight and Zula Nancy Hennesy;and his stepmother Ethel Crowe Knight. Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home from 6 p m until 8 p m today and after 8 a m. tomorrow. Funeral service will be held at 10 a m tomorrow in the funeral home chapel with Rev KarlTingle officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellis Cemetery.
