Early Oil Boom is Recalled
William Wood Magee, 72 year-old former general manager and vice president of Lido Oil Company, played an active roll in the oil industry of Wilbarger County from its early development until his retirement as an independent oil operator in 1961.
Mr. Magee, a native of Louisiana who came to Texas as a teenager because of his health after contracting malaria, was a San Antonio area farmer when he went to work for Rentex Oil Company in 1920 after heavy rains had ruined his crops.
He landed a temporary job in a new oil field, a mile from his farm, but the job stretched into a career that spanned some 40 years; more than 30 of them in Wilbarger County.
Mr. Magee was transferred to Vernon and employed by the Seigler Oil Company as field superintendent in 1929, after Seigler No. 1, the discovery well for oil production on Waggoner Ranch Property in the central part of the county, and three other wells had been drilled in what was to become known as Zacawiesta Field.
He launched his career with Seigler in a period of bitterly-fought court litigation and oil rights disputes, when it was considered wise to have a watchman guarding water lines and equipment.
On one occasion, a major water line supplying rigs in the field was ripped out by a bull-dozer in an effort to halt drilling operations.
Seven suits were pending against Seigler when Mr. Magee moved to Vernon and the bitterness and the tension which resulted remain the most memorable feature of his years as an oilman although he has brought in gushers and battled oil well fires under conditions that were primitive, compared to today's standards.
Mr. Magee saw more than 100 wells drilled on the property, virtually all of them offsets to proved production. Many of the early-day wells are still producing and the potential still exists for additional development, he feels.
Seigler was reorganized as Lido Oil Company in 1930, and Mr. Magee was designated general manager and vice president of the company in 1943. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Lido Oil Company from 1932 to 1958, at which time, the company was dissolved. He remained in charge of the production as an independent oil operator until his retirement in 1961, at which time the production properties were taken over by Cities Service.
Magee was born December 21, 1892 at Franklinton, La., son of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Magee. His father was a farmer and operator of a general store.
Two brothers, one a bank vice president in Bogalusa, La., and the other an oil company employee at Tampico for 20 years, are deceased.
He has three living sisters, Mrs. E. B. McAllister of San Antonio, and Mrs. Nan Blakeman and Mrs. Rubye E. Esser, both of Houston.
Mr. Magee grew up on a creek-land farm in primitive wooded territory about a hundred miles north of New Orleans, attending and graduating from Franklinton Central Institute, a private school which was operated before public schools were established in Washington Parish.
Franklinton, a community of about 3,000, was county seat of the parish.
Mr. Magee moved to Texas as a 17 year old, farming in the Medina Valley, a well-known truck farming area. He recalls that the Gunter Hotel was under construction when he arrived at San Antonio.
He had developed a farming operation of his own and before his parents eventually moved to San Antonio in 1914.
Utilizing artesian wells, his early farming was done by irrigation.
Mr. Magee owned a 160 acre farm 11 miles south of San Antonio at the time he joined Rentex Oil Company. He helped build a central power plant for rod-line wells, then later was truck-driver and roustabout for the company.
He married Frances Wertley Coyne, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Francis Michael Coyne in San Antonio in 1927. The Coynes had previously lived in the same section of Louisiana from which Mr. Magee had moved, and his father-in-law, a one time Buick, Chandler and Oldsmobile dealer at Eagle Pass, had worked in construction of the Panama Canal.
Mr. Magee's first impression of Wilbarger County wasn't especially good. He visited the Seigler lease prior to his transfer here during a dust storm and recalls a companion asking as they waited outside a pumper shack in an automobile, "Wouldn't you hate to live in this forsaken country?"
He agreed.
When he was transferred to Vernon a co-worker predicted he would be here no more than two or three weeks, but it was six years before he saw the friend again and in the interim, Mr. Magee had grown fond both of Vernon and this area.
The family lived the first year in Vernon, then moved to a company home on the lease near Zacawiesta, where they remained until moving back to Vernon in 1945.
Mrs. Magee says that she and the family moved to the lease simply in "self-defense", in order to be with Mr. Magee.
The children attended the old South Vernon School, which Mr. Magee served as a board member. Mr. Magee was also a charter member of the old South Lockett School board, when the two districts consolidated and the present South Lockett building was constructed, he served as secretary of the South Lockett board for a number of years.
Mr. Magee has been a member of the Harlindale Masonic Lodge since 1924, is a past member of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the First Methodist Church of Vernon and a past board member.
He and Mrs. Magee make their home at 2701 Bismarck Street.
They have three children, Mrs. David K. Putteet of Lubbock, whose husband operates a sign and outdoor advertising company; Mrs. Lawrence C. Olson of Belton, Mo., whose husband is an engineer for an oil company, and Robert W. Magee of Amarillo, a junior engineer for Pioneer Natural Gas Company.
The two daughters were valedictorians of South Lockett High School and Mr. Magee had the privilege of presenting them their diplomas. All three children attended Texas Tech.
They have presented the Magees with six grandchildren - two boys and four girls.

Oscar Magee, native of Washington Parish, brother of the late O. B. Magee, died Friday in Tampico, Mexico, survivors are his widow, four sons and his mother. He was 46. Remains sent to San Antonio, TX.
