(This census indicates that Melvina has had nine children and seven are still alive as of 1910. The only child that is dead at this time that the family knows about is Benny Creel who died July 18, 1897 and is buried at Fisher Church, in Washington Parish, LA. My Mother, Veda Creel, says that Mrs. Exie Ilie Carem Givens, wife of Walter Samuel Givens told Daddy, Arlie W. Creel, that William L. Creel and Melvina had a baby that died and they buried it on their old place. I do not know the location of this farm. OBITUARY: 03-16-1939:
W.L. (Bill) Creel, aged 69 years, and a native of Washington Parish, but for the past few years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. W.O. McDaniel in Tangipahoa, died March 13th. Interment was in the Fisher Church cemetery. Survivors are 3 sons, Houston and Arlie of the Bethel community; 3 daughters, Mrs. W.O. McDaniel and Tom McDaniel of Stony Point, and Mrs. Magee of Baton Rouge; 1 brother Narvel Creel of Bogalusa, and 2 sisters, Mrs. W.W. Walters of Bethel and Mrs. Calvin Sylvest of Fisher community.
BIOGRAPHY: Grandfather Bill Creel died when I, Kenneth Creel, was about 2 years old. When Bill Creel was 28 years old, his father, Thomas R. Creel, Jr. sold him ten acres of land for $20.00. This land is part of the land later owned by Mr. C. L. Creel (his son) and was past on to his son, Charles Creel.
The land is located in NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 30 Township 2 S. R. 103 St. Helena Med. The act of sale is dated Nov. 26, 1889. T. R. Creel was 54 years old when he sold him the land. This is also the location of T. R. Creel's mother's grave, Mrs. Elizabeth Creel. her grave is located west of the old house in a field approximately 200 yards from She house.
Grandfather Bill Creel owned and operated a saw mill and he moved all over Washington and Tangiphoa parishes operating the mill. Records at the Washington Parish court house indicates that he would buy the land, cut the timber and then resale the property.
After Grandmother Melvinia died, Grandfather began to drink very heavily. He would go to New Orleans, get drunk and sometimes would be "rolled" by prostitutes on Bourbon Street. On one occasion Grandfather Bill was in New Orleans with his brother and was run over by a police car. Noone was injured.
My father, Arlie W. Creel, told me that on occasions Grandfather Creel would come in drunk and throw money on the floor or into the fire.
Grandfather Bill remarried to Ms. Stacy Corkern. Later on Ms. Corkern developed cancer of her feet and was unable to walk. Stories have it that Grandfather Creel would not buy her a wheelchair or crutches. however, he did hire Mrs. Lucy Ballard to keep house and take care of Ms. Stacy.
Later after he stopped operating the saw mill, he operated a grist mill located on the Tchefuncta River off highway 450 between what is now known as Seal's store and Stoney Point. the property is located west of highway 450.
In 1911 May Creel, daughter of Bill Creel died approximately age 3, and also a set of twins were still born.???? My mother, Veda Creel, thinks that Grandpa Bill Creel may have a child buried in a cemetery on Hwy 450, a place known as the old Givings place. None of the children of Bill Creel knew of this.

As we go to press we learn of the death of M.W.F. Varnado, who had been critically ill for the past several weeks. The funeral takes place this Thursday morning at the Varnado cemetery at 11 am.

At his home September 19th, 1917, W.F. Varnado died. He was born December 25, 1852, was married to Elizabeth Corkern, 3-9-1871. To this union there was born fifteen children, all of which are living except two. He leaves a wife, thirteen children, twenty-three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Mr. Varnado provided well for his family and did it altogether by farming. He joined the Baptist church about May 1871 and was a deacon of the Franklinton Baptist church at his death. He was buried the following day at the family cemetery, five miles south west from Franklinton. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C.T. Corkern
before a large audience of people after which he was laid to rest to await the resurrection morning.

OBITUARY: Franklinton Leader - Monday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. C.J. Gayer, Rev. C.T. Corkern died at the age of 65 years, 11 months, and 21 days.
He married 1st, Mollie Magee, sister of W.L. Magee. He later married Mrs. May Voyles, widow of Rev. Claude Voyles of Shreveport. The following children survive him, Mrs. Marion Knight,
C.J. Gayer, and 1 son, John Corkern, all of Franklinton; Mrs. Iddo Crain of Hammond; Miss Annette Corkern of Magnolia; Mrs.W.M. Edwards, Texas; and Rev. W.A. Corkern of Kerns, Texas. Funeral services were held at the Ellis cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, brother, 5 sisters, Mrs. M.T. Knight, Mrs. C.J. Gayer, Mrs. W.M. Edwards of Franklinton, Mrs. I.J. Crain of Baton Rouge, Miss. Annette Corkern of Hazlehurst, Ms. Interment was in the Ellis cemetery.
