Dennis Mitchell GOFF [image] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (James Thomas GOFF , James William GOFF , Thomas GOFF , Daniel GOFF , Stephen GOFF , Samuel , Aaron , Phillip ) was born 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 on 15 Mar 1877 in Cedar, Callaway, MO. He died 14, 15 on 26 Jan 1931 in Ahtanum, Yakima, WA. The cause of death was heart attack and high blood pressure. He was buried on 28 Jan 1931 in Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Yakima, WA. Dennis was employed 16, 17 as carman on Katy RR 1913 - 1917 in Denison, Grayson, TX. He resided in 1913 in 311 E Day St, Denison, Grayson, TX. He resided in Apr 1915 in 502 Kentucky St, Wichita Falls, Wichita, TX. He joined religion Baptist. He was employed as carpenter on Katy RR 1917 - 1928 in Denison, Grayson, TX. He resided in 1917 in 413 E Day St, Denison, Grayson, TX. He resided Sep 1920 - 1928 in 211 Burt St, Denison, Grayson, TX. He was employed as fruit picker 1928 - Oct 1930 in Ahtanum, Yakima, WA. He resided in 1928 in Rt 4, Ahtanum, Yakima, WA.

Maud and Dennis moved to Yakima, Washington when the KATY Railroad labor troubles in the 1920s threw him out of work in Denison. He was tired of the violence that these strikes engendered and thought his family would have a more stable life in the Yakima area where his father and several of his siblings were living. Papers in Maude's effects show that he did inquire with the Arizona Cotton Association about the possiblity of jobs there. Funeral records show that he had lived in the Yakima area since 1928. When Dennis died in 1931, Maud had only his family for comfort as her Mother, Fannie, was in Denison, Texas at the time, and sons were away looking for work. Paul didn't find out about his father's death until April and was devastated. His son, Willard, was with him when he died. On his deathbed, Dennis had Willard vow that he would always look after his mother.

OBITUARY: Yakima Herald
Dennis M. Goff
Dennis M. Goff, 53, a resident of the Ahtanum district for the last two and one-halp years, died in his home at 5 o'clock Monday afternoon. The family includes the father, James T. Goff of Ahtanum; three sons, Marvin and Willard Goff of Ahtanum and Paul Goff of Houston, Tex., and a setp-son, Harold Gerrish of Ahtanum; two brothers, Carl of Ahtanum and Marvin of Houson; three sisters, Mrs. Foley M. Smith of Jefferson City, Mo., Mrs. Bessie Mudd of Esbon, Kas., and Mrs. Merle Stiltner of Ahtanum. He had been ill since October. Shaw & Sons has charge of the funeral arrangements.

Dennis married 7 Rosa Maud PAULSELL [image] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 daughter of Armenius Calvin PAULSELL and Frances Mary STRAWHUN on 30 Mar 1907 in Grayson Co, TX. Rosa was born 8, 9, 10, 11 on 22 Jun 1884 in Rolla, Phelps Co, MO. She died 12 on 27 May 1949 in Wichita Falls, Wichita, TX. She was buried 13 on 29 May 1949 in Rosemont Cemetery, Wichita Falls, Wichita, TX. Rosa joined religion Nazarene.

BIOGRAPHY: She was a woman of great passions. She either loved you intensely or she wanted nothing to do with you. Because of chronic bad health and the Depression, her life was filled with more hardship than reward. She was totally devoted to her children almost to the exclusion of anyone else. A very sentimental and honest woman, she kept almost all of the correspondence that she had received in her lifetime. (Her great-granddaughter, Gwen Goff Hobbs, has possession of them.)

BIOGRAPHY: According to family lore, Harry had fallen in love with Maud, but, her mother would not allow him to marry her since Edna was the eldest. So, Harry married Edna, grew to love her dearly and had children with her. Nothing in the letters that Maud left substiates this theory although all sides of the family say it's true. After Edna died of cancer in 1930 and Maud's second husband, Dennis, died of heart trouble in 1931, he contacted Maud and asked her to marry him. He even went to Yakima to help her move her family and her things to Wichita Falls.

My grandmother didn't want to come to Washington, she loved her home and did want to leave a family that she was so very close to. She had one brother that she was especially fond of, Tom Smothers. Are we related to the Smothers Brothers? I don't know. Tom Smother's son lives in Rogue River Oregon and we have been going down to their place for Thanksgiving.
