Goffe-Goff-Gough Family From Wethersfield, Connecticut to Manifest Destiny and Beyond

Eighth Generation

(Continued)

569. Orlando Scott GOFF 1, 2, 3, 4 (Alfred GOFF , John GOFF , John GOFF , Nathaniel GOFF , Phillip GOFF , Phillip , Phillip ) was born 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 on 10 Sep 1843 in Middletown, Middlesex, CT. He died 10 on 17 Oct 1916 in Boise, Ada, ID. He was buried in Morris Hill Cemetery, Boise, Ada, Idaho.

BIOGRAPHY: Orlando Scott Goff was the post photographer for Fort Abraham Lincoln in Montana. He took a series of photographs of George Armstrong Custer as well as many photographs of Native Americans, including Chief Joseph of the Nez Pierce and Sitting Bull. He had photography studios or galleries in Ft. Abraham Lincoln, Bismarck, North Dakota and, possibly, Boise, Idaho. From the David F. Berry website (http://photoswest.org/exhib/barry/barry.htm), we learn that he had an apprentice named David Frances Berry who was born 6 March 1854 in Rochester, New York. Orlando was his mentor, employer and, later, business partner in Bismarck, Dakota Territory. David F. Barry went on to photograph and become friends with Sitting Bull, his son Louie as well as Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley and Red Cloud.
Another source gives his biography thusly: "Born in East Haddam, Connecticut, September 10, 1843; died in Idaho, 1917. Served in the Union Army, 10th Connecticut Infantry. Learned photography in Lyons, New York, and worked as an itinerate around Portage, Wisconsin. Moved to Yankton, 1871, and established its first gallery. He hired Stanley J. Morrow, 1871. Studio in Bismark, 1873; moved his studio to Ft. Abraham Lincoln later that year, where he photographed Custer and his circle. Moved back to Bismark, 1877. Goff embarked on a photographic tour of the Plains' forts, 1878. and left his studio in the charge of David F. Barry, his former protégé at Portage. Took the first photograph of Chief Joseph, 1877, and Sitting Bull, 1881, after their respective surrenders. Operated studio at Fort Custer, Montana Territory, late 1870s, and opened studios in Havre and Ft. Assiniboine, Montana, 1896. Goff retired, 1900, while in Montana and later served in the state legislature."
In the Index of Photographers, Page 550. His name reads: "Goff, O.S. . . . . . . . Colorado, Dakota, Montana, Traveling, Wisconsin" (Biographies of Western Photographers, A Reference Guide to Photographers Working in the 19th Century American West, by Carl Mautz, Carl Mautz Publishing Co, 1997). Thank you Charles R. McCain for finding this source.
In a copy of a document from the Collections in the Montana Historical Society Archives received from Charles McCain, Orlando S. Goff filled and signed personally the following information: His mother is Caroline Giddings and father is Alfred Goff; he was born Connecticut, Middletown, 1843; his wife is Annie Eaton and married in 1875; his daughter is Bessie M. Goff Olson; he is Presbyterian; and belongs to the Masons; his occupation is that of photographer; and his service in the Civil War; he is a Republican. (received 2003)

I have no idea where she was in the 1876 Callaway County MO State Census that she was enumerated with her husband and children. However, she would have been 15 in this census, and she might be a second wife and stepmother to these children.

His mother is probably not Alice Jane Green.

James Thomas GOFF and Nancy Elizabeth DAVIDSON are 2nd cousins. Their common ancestors are Thomas STUART and Elizabeth .

Funeral home record shows that he had lived in Yakima area since 1919.

Harold Goff,a grandson, recollects that James lived with his father, Lake Goff, in Yacolt, WA for a time after Marilla died and when he felt that she was "calling" him, he had Harold take him back to Yakima so that he could die there. He gave him 20 silver dollar pieces that were minted before 1880.

This is recollections of his great-granddaughter, Bernice Rockwell Rappleye:
" James Thomas came out here and helped plant the first pear orchard for a man named Bannister. He also had a grocery store and some cabins that he rented out... Grandpa use to trade with the Indians when they came down the mountains and into town. He would take moccasins, beaded bags, tobacco and other items in trade for food. He also would let some of the towns people charge their food when they didn't have the money. My mother also worked in the store. I was very young, but I have some vague memories about some of the folks that came into the store. A couple of men who use to trade at the store made me a kind of kiddie cart out of wood. I remember the cart, because after much use, it developed a crack down the middle and it use to pinch my bottom whenever I first got on it."
