From: HISTORY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CALIFORNIA --
"Stephen Goff was a Southerner, born in Guilford County, N.C., January 17, 1811. When a young man he moved out to Wisconsin, where he lived until some time after marriage, and during that period he served in the Black Hawk war, from the time of his enlistment to the end of the war, and in his later years he received a pension [for] this military service. By occupation he was a carpenter. In the year 1849 he came across the plains to the Pacific coast with a train of ox wagons, leaving in Wisconsin. Going up to Oregon, he was engaged in the stock business there for five years, and returned to the east by way of the isthmus. The voyage from Aspinwall (now Colon) to New York City was made in a United States mail steamer and was marked by at least one exciting incident. A Spanish war vessel fired two shots across the bow of the ship to halt her, and a Spanish Officer came aboard and made a hasty examination, the ship being allowed to proceed as he retired. Mr. Goff rejoined his family in Wisconsin and in 1855 set out with them for the west by the plains route. Their first stop in California was in Shasta county, and in 1857 they came to Humboldt county, living about one year at Rohnerville before removing to Petrolia, in the Mattole valley, where they settled in 1859. The Indians were active and hostile at the time, and after several white men had been killed the government troops were sent down to protect the settlers. The Goffs were here through the primitive period, and have done their share toward the opening up and improvement of the country, not only from a material point of view, but through their support and encouragement of the best influences set on foot in the vicinity. Mr. Goff bought the property on the Mattole river known as the old Goff ranch, and there he made his home to the end of his long life. He worked industriously to rear his large family in comfort and to provide them with the best of the times afforded. His progressive spirit made him the recipient of public honors in the early days. Even during his short residence in Oregon he had been elected to represent his district in the state legislature, and about 1862 he was elected assessor of Humboldt county, serving two successive terms; his deputy was William H. Wallace. He always took an interest in the welfare of the county and in seeing good men in office."

The following was written by Kathleen Hale, a descendant of Samuel GOFF (b. 1777):
Nancy Lumley, a GOFF cousin, related this account to me over the phone. She said in North Carolina the Goff family tells the story that Stephen GOFF as a young boy about 14, was working in the North Carolina fields. It was an especially tiring day and he came to his father and said, "Pa, I'm not going to do this any more." His father [Samuel Goff] said, "that's fine, you can have this horse, (and he named a horse they owned,) and I wish you well." So Stephen took the horse, packed his things and left for the west, eventually going to Wisconsin, Oregon and California where he died as a Rancher and farmer, doing those things he refused to do any longer in North Carolina."

Letter to Squire M Goff date July 3d - 1887 Humboldt Co, CA
Dear nefphue,
as its been a long time Since I rote to you I hardly know how to write to you to make Satisfactory to you we are all in good helth Except your ant she is not well but She is Still around and does all her house work yet. She is 69 years old last April , and
Stephen married Mary Deborah HINTON 1 on 3 Apr 1837 in White Oak Spring, Iowa, WI. Mary was born on 3 Apr 1818 in Delaware Co, OH. She died 2 on 14 Oct 1908 in Mattole Valley, Humboldt, CA. She was buried in Petrolia, Humboldt, CA.
At White Oak Springs, Wis., Mr. Goff met Miss Mary Deborah Hinton (born April 3, 1818), whom he married there, April 3, 1837, and who survived him six years, his death occurring March 11, 1902, hers in 1908, at their home place on the Mattole River, CA. As previously mentioned, both lived to be over ninety years old. Mrs. Goff was a famous nurse in the early days, and probably as popular and well known for her kindliness and sweet dispositions as for her more practical qualities. In her professional capacity she was called upon to minister among all classes, and never lost an opportunity to relieve suffering and pain, or to do a generous or gracious act, especially among the poor and needy. She attended many births, and being a woman of intelligent mind realized the necessity for records and their value and took the pains to record births and deaths in the valley for a long period. Her benign and helpful character endeared her to a wide circle which appreciated the good she did in her unselfish life, and she is held in loving memory all over the territory where so many years of her life were spent. To Mr. and Mrs. Goff were born twelve children. . . .
Only one child, Samuel, did not survive infancy.

OBITUARY: Mary Deborah Hinton was born on April 3, 1818, in Delaware County, Ohio. during her girlhood her parents moved into Davis County, Illinois, in 1835. Two years later she married Stephen Goff. They made their home in Illinois until 1849, when they moved westward to Grant County, Wisconsin, where they remained until the western fever reached them iin 1856. In the spring of that year hey started for California. Crossing the plains they reached Nebraska where they decided it was too late to continue the journey that year.
In the spring of 1857 they resumed their journey by ox team and reached Shasta County in the fall. They they remained a year and then came to Humboldt.
Their first settlement was near Rohnerville in 1858 and the next year they went into the Mattole valley. There they have made their home ever since.
"Grandma Goff", as she was affectionately called, was a woman of exceptional parts, devout and loyal to her religious faith.
Over seventy years ago she joined the Methodist Episcopal church and since 1859 had enjoyed reading the New York Christian Advocate.
Until a short time before her death her memory was very clear on pioneer events and her neighbors were always interested in the venerable woman's recital of those stirring times when life inhumboldt meant many risks and few comforts.
To Mr. and Mrs. Goff were born twelve children - eight boys and four girls and of these the following are living: Mrs. Frank Gouthier of Petrolia, Charles Fremont and Stephen Taylor Goff of Petrolia, Mrs. Benton of Oakland, J. B. Goff of Lone rock, Oregon, F. M. Goff of Coquille City, Oregon, and James H. Goff of Waddington.

Judy Weisburg contacted me on 30 Jul 2002 to tell me that she believes that Harriet's maiden name is Bowen and that she's the daughter of John Bowen of Owen Co, IN. She believes that Harriet married a Wm H. Hauser and then later married Jesse. She will contact me if and when she obtains proof. ggh
Note by Judy Weisburg on this theory - "Basically what I come up with is that the probate info on my John Bowen (1788-1852) has a list of John's heirs which includes Harriet and Jesse
Wetherly. I found the list a little odd because for John's 2 sons, only the male was listed, but for all his daughters the husband was also listed. Perhaps this comes under the heading "times have changed," but I've not seen this pattern in many other probate documents."
