(In the 1850 Callaway Co, MO census, there's a George Goff listed as age 13 and born in MO. He's listed in the Napolean B. Ferguson home on page 244. Also in that home, is the Alexander Cleveland family. Could the male child listed here as under age 5 be the same? On page 205, there's a Jane Goff, age 47 born in KY, with a son George W. Goff, aged 13. There's an Elizabeth Johnston and her children also living in the home. They are living between Susan Cleveland and her family and the Thomas Humphreys family. She would also fit the age group of the female listed in James Goff's home age 30-40 in 1840.)
He's not listed in the 1844 MO State Census for Callaway Co, Mo which leads me to believe that he had died in the time between the two censuses.
James married 1 (1) Sarah FAIRBANKS on 26 Dec 1797 in Guilford Co, NC. Sarah died before 1821 in NC.
PARENTS: There's a Mary Fairbanks listed near James and Sarah's home in the 1800 Guilford Co, NC census. There are two males under 10, one female between 11 & 16 and one female between 26 & 45. Could this be her mother and siblings?

Could she have been the Mrs. Nancy Ann Goff that married Wiley Madden in Callaway Co MO on 17 Jul 1847?
PARENTS: Isaiah Guymon & Elizabeth Flynn
117. Daniel GOFF 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (Stephen GOFF
, Samuel
, Aaron
, Phillip
) was born about 1777 in Lancaster Co, PA. He died after 1840 in Callaway Co, MO.
Daniel Goff moved to Callaway County shortly after his marriage to Elizabeth Stewart. He and Elizabeth are in the 1830 Callaway Co. Census, 1 male aged 50-60, 1 female age 60-70. This is the only census which gives a fairly accurate age for Thomas Stewart's wife. She was born in KY between 1760 and 1770. Daniel Goff was born before 1780. Elizabeth died between 1830 and 1840.
He is listed as a widower in the 1840 Howard Co MO Census.

Research:~ Judyth Goff writes- The same spelling of Simson was used by James himself in records and information given to the recorder at the Nauvoo, Illinois temple. Also, James has some history written referring to the fact that he has Irish ancestry. The area in Penn was settled by this group of Irish-Scottish Immigrants. It makes for interesting differences, and we are looking at is seriously, along with all other info. Doug indicated that he may contact you also.
She is Eleanor Simpson's (who married Samuel Goff) niece.

Jane GOFF 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born in 1811 in Warren Co, TN.
MARRIAGE: The is a marriage record in Callaway Co MO for a Jane Goff to Francis Erno on 18 Aug 1850. I'm not sure if this is the correct Jane Goff because she would have been 39 when she married.
Also, there's a Jane Goff listed in the 1850 Callaway Co MO Census Index. I wonder if this is her. |
Daniel married 1, 2 (2) Elizabeth on 25 Sep 1828 in Howard Co, MO. Elizabeth was born 3, 4 in 1765 in KY. She died in 1830/1840 in Callaway Co, MO.
SURNAME: I believe that her surname is possibly Young due to the fact that her daughter, America's middle name starts with a Y (It's not unusual during this time to name their children after the mother's maiden name.); America's oldest son is named Reuben Y. Goff, and there was a Reuben Young in Jessamine Co, KY at the same time as Elizabeth and her husband. This Reuben Young is listed in the 1810 Jessamine Co, KY census as being over 45 years of age and there was a white female in the household over 45 years old. I will investigate this further. In Bracken Co, KY in 1800, there's a Rueben Young, Sr and Rueben Young, Jr listed on the tax rolls.ggh
I found a Reuben Young listed on Ancestry.com who was born 1742 in Orange Co, VA and died Oct 1838 in Boone Co, MO. He married an Ann Wharton (1746 Orange Co, VA - 1838 Boone Co, MO) in 1760. They had a least one son, John Young who was born 1764 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, VA (the same county that Thomas Stuart, husband of Elizabeth, was from) and died 25 Feb 1855 in Palmyra, KY. ( I couldn't find where in KY this is.)
There's another entry Ancestry.com that lists a daugter, Sarah Young, for the couple. Sarah was born 1770 and died 14 Feb 1848. She was married to Zachariah Wharton in Orange Co, VA 19 Jan 1790. They had nine children.
In the IGI, Reuben in listed in Batch F821484 as the father of Reuben, Jr. who was married to Rosanna Bonwell and they had a son Thomas Young.
According to Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications, Pg 1280, Reuben Young was listed as a veteran from Virginia along with his wife Ann. The record number is W9041. His son, John Young, is listed as being a veteran of the Revolutionary and Indian Wars and it states that his was married to Mary Moore. Reuben is listed as his father in this record.
In the Records of Spotsylvania County, Virginia by William Armstong Crozier, 1955, there's an entry that would seem to tie the Stuart Family and the Young Family. Here's the excerpt -
":Augt. 31, 1787. Christian Riffe and Elizabeth, his wife, of Spots Co. to John True of same co. œ120 curr. 78 a. in St. Geo. Par., Spots Co., etc., etc. Jno. Crookshanks, Robt. True, Reuben Young. Feby?? 5, 1788. " pg 413. This looks like this is the father-in-law of Nancy Stuart, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Stuart.
Here are some other excerpts pertaining to Reuben Young in Spotsylvania Co, VA -
"Jany. 13, 1770. Joseph Wharton of Orange Co., son of Samuel Wharton of King Geo. Co., Decd., to Wharton Schooler of Spts. Co. œ10 curr. Title, interest and right in the est. of his decd. father, Samuel Wharton, etc. Witnesses, Reuben Young, John Schooler, Samuel Schooler. May 7, 1770. " pg 271
"April 10, 1770. Wm. Fitzhugh of Stafford Co., Esqr., to Reubin Young of Spts. Co. œ26 10s. curr. 78 a. in St. Geo. Par., Spts. Co. B. Johnston, Phillip Somerby, Jno. Brock, Jos. Brock. Decr. 16, 1770" pg 278
"Novr. 10, 1775. Wm. Riadon and Elizabeth, his wife, of Spts. Co. to Richard Young of sd. Co. œ20 curr. 66 a. in St. Geo. Par., Spts. Co. Reuben Young, James Adkins, Alexander Adkins. June 20, 1776." pg 326
"Feby. 21, 1781. Reuben Young of Spts. Co. and Ann, his wife, to Christian Rife of same county. œ125 curr. 78 a. in St. Geo. Par., Spts. Co. No witnesses. Feby. 21, 1782." pg 363
Samuel Wharton, brother to Ann Wharton, died 22 Oct 1738 and his will was probated in Nov 1738. A Robert Stuart was one of the witnesses to his probate and his sister Ann was listed as well as brothers, William, Charles, Zacheus, and Joseph; sisters, Martha (who was listed as a legitimate sister) and Ann, son-in-law James Williams, and mother Ann Turlong. pg 6 Spotsylvania County Records. (Anne notes that this couldn't be the Ann Wharton who married Reuben Young as she was born long after this Samuel Wharton had died.)
Also, in 1830 Warren Co, Kentucky, I found a Matthew Young, Reuben B. Young and Nathan G. Young. I don't know if these people tie into the Rueben Young of Orange County and Spotsylvania County, Virginia line but I think that Reuben Young had a brother Matthew Young who married Agnes Lusk who is my first cousin eight time removed. 118. Samuel GOFF 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (Stephen GOFF
, Samuel
, Aaron
, Phillip
) was born in 1777 in Lancaster Co, PA. He died about 1850 in Stokes Co, NC.
MILITARY: War Of 1812?There is a Samuel Goff listed in the Muster Roll of the Militia of North Carolina for the 8th Regiment, 2nd Co detached from the 2nd Surry Regiment.
William ADAMS was also from outside the Mears Fork area. He had been married in 1801 to Martha KIRKMAN, sister of Thomas and George KIRKMAN, and had probably become acquainted with the SIMPSONs through the family ties with the KIRKMANs. In Aug.
1812, William ADAMS sold all but 50 acres of this 163 acre tract to Samuel GOUGH. Samuel was another son of Stephen and Jane (PRICE) GOUGH and had been married in 1799 to Milly WEATHERLY who died young and he was married second in 1801 to Eleanor SIMPSON. daughter of Richard Jr. and Selah SIMPSON. Thus Samuel GOUGH's wife was a sister to Phereby KIRKMAN whose husband, George, was brother-in-law to William ADAMS. Samuel GOUGH held his tract less than a year before selling it inDec. 1812 to Aaron BISHOP.
According to Nona Williams, Samuel and Eleanor Simpson Goff moved to Stokes County, North Carolina in 1820.
