BIOGRAPHY: Stephen Goff m. Jane Price in 1773 at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster Co., Pa. His will (dated 1 Dec. 1790) was probated in Guilford Co., N. C. in 1799. Jane or Jean married (2nd) William Leek on 16 October 1799, Guilford Co., N. C.Stephen was in the army from Lancaster Co., Pa. in 1782; taxed in Lancaster Co. in 1783, but not in 1784.
Stephen Goff or Gauf was taxed from 1777 through 1783 in Lancaster Co. The records for 1774 & 1775 are missing. In 1783 he had 10 white inhabitants in his household. There is no list for 1784, and he was not listed after that in any of the records. So I think this would prove that my Samuel was born in Pennsylvania in 1777, and not N. C.

MILITARY: Goff Stephen pg 300 Connecticut First Lyman, Phineas Major-General Second Putnam, Israel Lieutenant-Colonel & Captain
He's listed as having died on 26 Nov 1762. However, an inquiry in the Boston Transcript in 1927 states that he went to Havana in 1762 and it's not known if he returned.
He and Jacob Hollister enlisted the same day. He also served again with Asahel Hollister.

MILITARY: In the Lancaster Co. PA Militia, Stephen was initially in the 1st Battalion of the 1st Regiment then the whole Battalion was transferred to the 2nd Regiment about 1778. He did not "march" or actually go to war.
He first enlisted in the East Side Lampeter Militia 7th Battalion, 8th Company, under the command of Captain Henry Kendrick in 1777 where he was a private 5th class. This term of enlistment lasted from 1770 to 1780.
He reenlisted in 1780 in the 1st Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia, 6th Company as a 3rd class private.
In the Ancestry.com database, Connecticut Soldiers of the French and Indian Wars which were taken from Hartford, CT Historical Society Records, there were two Stephen Goffs listed as serving in the French and Indian War.

MILITARY:~"Apparently the family in North Carolina often used the Gough spelling", Kathleen Hale, descendant, writes, "I have also speculated that Stephen Goff may have been born in Connecticut. The migration routes (the great wagon road) went from Connecticut to Lancaster County and on to Guilford County, North Carolina. I would be very surprised if you receive any military information from the National Archives pertaining to Stephen Goff of Lancaster County. He was apparently not a part of the Continental line, just on the list of men who were the right age to serve in the local militia. The information in the Pennsylvania Archives concerning him is found with a variety of spellings, including Gawf and Goof. I worked with the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution for almost eight years. I think there is a strong chance that Stephen Goff could be established as a Revolutionary War ancestor with Patriotic Service, since there does not seem to be any evidence that he served. He paid the supply tax which was used to support the militia and was on the list of men eligible to serve. That usually is enough evidence. "(Note by Virginia Manley)

Stephen married 3, 4 Jean PRICE 1, 2 daughter of Benjamin PRICE and Susanna POSTLETHWAITE on 6 Apr 1773 in St James Episcipal Church, Lancaster Co, PA. Jean was born about 1755 in PA. She died after 1800.

The debate over whether her given name is Jane or Jean will probably never be answered to everyone's satisfaction. In Stephen Goff's will, he names her as Jean. In her marriage record to William Leek, she is listed as Jane.
There's a David Price listed in the 1800 Guilford Co, NC census. Her brother?
There is speculation that a Benjamn Price and Susanna Postlewaithe are her parents.

Here is what has been gathered on them as of 11/12/99:
