Goffe-Goff-Gough Family From Wethersfield, Connecticut to Manifest Destiny and Beyond

First Generation

1. Phillip GOFFE I 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 was born about 1627. He died in 1676 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT. Phillip was employed 9 as Timber yard owner in Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, Hartford, CT. He was employed 10 as Town Crier in 1651 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT. He died 11 in 1674 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT.

The first known record of Phillip Goffe was in 1649. He was the first town crier for the town of Wethersfield, Hartford County, CT in 1651. He built the first house in the Rocky Hill, Connecticut in 1656 where he was granted his homestead in 1655. A creek that runs through Rocky Hill and empties into the Connecticut River named Goff's Creek is named for him. According to GENEALOGICAL NOTES ON THE FOUNDING OF NEW ENGLAND, page 226, he owned a "timberman" and was also a carpenter and a husbandman. He also built the first house in Rocky Hill in 1655.
He's listed in the town census for Wethersfield in 1669 as Phillip Gofe..
He died in 1674. Children, Rebecca, aged 23, Jacob 25, Philip 21, Moses 18, and Aaron 16. Mr. Goff was an early settler, and had a brother with him--married sisters.(Source: A Catalogue of the Names of the First Puritan Settlers of the Colony of Connecticut. Hartford, CT: - , 1846.){There was also this entry in the source - Witchfield, Margaret--died at Windsor in 1663. Her daughters were, Hannah and Abigail. They married two men by the name of Goff at Wethersfield. Her son married Miss Hayward. Margaret was a sister of Jane Winship, who left a daughter Joanna. Samuel Goff had children, Edward and Deborah.} I wonder if Phillip Goffe I had a brother Samuel?
I have found another record of an early Goffe in Hartford Co, CT. This one concerns a marriage between Hannah Goffe and John Moore (b 5 Dec 1645 Windsor, Hartford, CT) on 21 Sep 1664 in Windsor. (Source-"Matthew Grant Record, 1639-1681" in Some Early Records and Documents of and Relating to The Town of Windsor, Connecticut, 1639-1703 (Hartford 1930) and Great Migrations Begins:Immigrants to New England, 1620-33). Is this a sister to Phillip?

He's listed as a Freemason in the COLONIAL CONNECTICUT RECORDS 1636-1776, Vol. 2, pg 520.

BIRTH: There's an IGI record for a Phillip Goffe born 2 Nov 1617 in Saint Savior Parish, Dartmouth, Devonshire, England. He's the son of Thomas Goffe. This record is a parish register transcript from the Parish Church of Dartmouth.
It is entirely possible that Phillip is the son of Thomas Goffe and that this Thomas Goffe was one of the Merchant Adventurers who helped finance the Mayflower and other ships to the Colonies.
