According to family tradition and MAMMOTH CAVE Forgotten Stories of It's People, Dr. Doyel was called out one night to perform a surgery on a man who had been caught stealing corn. He was able to patch him up. When Dr. Doyel was later questioned about what happened, he refused to give the man's name, stating that his honor and the oath he took as a doctor forbade him from giving that information. As a result, he was excluded from the Little Jordan Baptist Church, the church for which his father had donated land.
